What Is the Rave Diet?

The RAVE diet was developed by Mike Anderson. It is a vegetarian diet geared towards weight loss and boosting the immune system. RAVE is an acronym for no Refined foods, no Animal foods, no Vegetable oils, and no Exceptions and Exercise.

Types of Foods

The RAVE diet uses only whole fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts and seeds. It eschews any meats (including fish) and processed vegetable products such as cooking oil.

Flexibility

In most cases, a person can substitute his or her favorite whole food in any of the RAVE recipes. The diet can be adjusted to fit various tastes and food sensitivities.

Rationale

According to Anderson, while animal-based foods hinder the immune system, plant-based foods boost the immune system and reduce the occurrence of diseases such as cancer.

Health Benefits

The Cleveland Clinic Foundation has endorsed the RAVE diet, which, in addition to helping weight loss, is the only diet scientifically proven to reverse heart disease.

About the Author

Mike Anderson is a medical researcher, author and vegan. His book, "The RAVE Diet and Lifestyle," explains the diet in detail as well as the relationship between diet and disease.

Good House Cats for Children

Good House Cats for Children

Having a cat is an important way to teach children about responsibility. Many children will not know how to handle a cat, so get a sociable animal. Purebred cats will give you predictable behavior, but mixed breeds have less genetic disorders. Teach children how to handle cats gently and wait until children can follow instructions. Choose a cat requiring little physical maintenance and one that is spayed or neutered to help with the adaptation process.

American Shorthairs

American Shorthairs, are, as their names imply, cats with short fur. They are, like their ancestors, the British Shorthairs, muscular and strong cats with affectionate natures. They come in a range of colors from Brown Tabbies with a Mackerel pattern to a Tortoiseshell that is black with cream and red patches. American Shorthairs have a tendency to be overweight so be careful with their diet. You'll need to groom these cats weekly with a soft cat brush or grooming gloves.

Birmans

Birmans are affectionate and loyal cats who have a gentle playfulness. They have fur that requires mild combing every week, but it tends not to mat. Birmans are noted for their soft fur that comes in a variety of colors, such as seal, blue and tortie. There are not many medical problems for Birmans. Occasionally, Birmans develop heart conditions, skeletal problems, corneal disorders, and they tend toward obesity.

Burmese Cats

Burmese are friendly to people, including children, and they are extremely loyal to their owners. They are shorthair cats and require little in the way of grooming, except for the occasional attention with a grooming glove. Burmese cats come in sable brown color, blue, champagne and platinum shades. They tend to be robust and muscular cats, but may have genetic factors that can cause such diseases as cranial defects and eye problems. A consideration for purebred Brown Burmese cats is that they are at risk for Diabetes Mellitus.

Russian Blues

Russian Blues are intelligent and affectionate cats that are good with children. They are also known as Archangel cats from their point of origin of the Russian port of Arkhangelsk on the White Sea.These cats are amiable, but they are also able to entertain themselves with their high degree of curiosity about the world. This type of cat is a shorthair with fur that does not require much grooming except regular attention with a grooming glove and veterinarian-prescribed skin moisturizer for dander in dry climates. These are beautiful cats with a dense coat of blue-grey fur tipped with silver highlights. Russian Blues have a tendency toward polycystic kidney disease so feeding these cats only fish in their diet can cause problems.

The History of the Atkins Diet

The Atkins Diet gained enormous popularity in the last decade of the 20th century, but the diet and the creator of the diet had already been around for two decades before this. The diet was first seen as a fad, and much research showed potential dangers of this diet during the 1990s. However, the diet is still popular and has fans today. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Founder

The Atkins Diet was founded by Dr. Robert C. Atkins. Dr. Atkins would conclude, after years of research, that the only way to properly lose weight quickly was to eat lots of protein and fat by eating meat, fish, poultry and eggs. This became the initial stage of the Atkins Diet. Later stages use a method of monitoring carbohydrates to reach weight loss goals and sustain those goals.

Origin

The Atkins Diet was created by Dr. Atkins when he published his first book, "Dr. Atkins Diet Revolution," in 1972. The Atkins Diet became a part of regular dietary treatment at his clinic during the 1980s and 1990s.

Other Books

Dr. Atkins revised his book in 1992 and also published several companion books, including "Dr. Atkins' Carbohydrate Gram Counter" and "The Atkins Essentials."

Popularity

The Atkins Diet gained popularity within Dr. Atkins's practice first back in the 1980s. This is because the Atkins Diet doesn't rely on counting calories. The main idea which draws people is that they simply watch carbohydrates and enrich the intake of protein. These facts helped the Atkins Diet reach the level of popularity it has.

Concerns

Many studies were conducted which showed possible concerns or problems using the diet with regard to its effect on heart disease and other conditions. It was during this time that certain people, such as pregnant women, children and diabetics, were told to avoid this diet due to the potential to cause health problems from the lack of carbohydrates and certain needed fats.

Diet & Nutrition for Heart Patients

Diet & Nutrition for Heart Patients

Proper nutrition and diet maintain a healthy heart. More than 80 percent of cardiovascular disease can be prevented through dietary changes, according to Food Cures (see Reference 1). The best nutrition includes foods low in salt and sugar and filled with fish, fresh fruits, vegetables, and fiber, as recommended by the American Heart Association (see Resource 1).

Fatty Fish

Salmon is the most commonly known fatty fish. Other familiar fish that fit into the category include tuna, mackerel, halibut, sardines and catfish. These fish get the spotlight for nutrition because they're excellent sources of Omega-3 fatty acids. Heart-healthy fish keep cholesterol and triglycerides under control and reduce inflammation (see Reference 1).

There are several ways to prepare fish such as grilling, baking, broiling or poaching your fish. Season fish with lemon, herbs, or citrus marinade to give it flavor (see Reference 3).

Eat at least two servings of 8 oz. to 12 oz. fatty fish each week.

Fruits and Vegetables

Eating fresh fruits and vegetables each day will give your body the vitamins, minerals and fiber it needs to keep you healthy. You reduce your chances of dying from heart disease by 27 percent when you eat fruits and vegetables with each meal, according to Food Cures.

Eat between three and five servings of fruits and vegetables each day. The preferred servings are between 7 and 10 servings daily. One serving equals one medium-size fruit; 1 cup of leafy green vegetables; 1/2 cup of chopped fruit or cooked vegetables, legumes or beans; or 1/2 cup of fruit or vegetable juice (see references 1 and 2).

Fiber

Soluble fiber is great food for the heart. It reduces cholesterol by 10 percent to 15 percent, according to Food Cures. Oats are the grain that contains the most soluble fiber. Eating 2 g to 3 g of regular oatmeal or oat bran cereal daily can improve cholesterol by 2 percent to 3 percent, as stated in Food Cures. Also get 2 g of soluble fiber a day by eating 1/2 cup of cooked beans, legumes or peas. Six to eight servings daily are preferred. One serving equals one slice of whole-grain bread; 1 oz. of whole-grain cereal; and 1/2 cup of cooked brown pasta, rice or cereal (see Reference 2).

Avoid white bread, pasta and rice. Much of the fiber has been removed from these refined foods. Instead, eat whole grains, brown rice or brown pasta.

What to Eat on the Two-Week Induction on Atkins

The two-week Atkins induction is also known as "phase 1" of the program. The majority of the list of acceptable food to eat during these two weeks includes seafoods and meats, but there are also other food choices you can mix into your Atkins selections. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Seafood

Enjoy low-carb seafood like tuna and salmon. Also eat shellfish like shrimp and squid. Try to avoid heavy consumption of mussels or oysters because they contain more carbs.

Meat

Enjoy all basic types of meat like bacon, chicken, ham, pork and veal. You can also eat uncommon types of meat like quail, goose and pheasant.

Eggs

Enjoy multiple styles of eggs like omelets, over-easy, scrambled and hard-boiled. Mix the eggs with accepted vegetables or a slice of cheese.

Vegetables

Only small portions of vegetables are allowed during the two weeks. The Atkins plan recommends mushrooms, iceburg lettuce, alfalfa sprouts, cucumber and celery. Other vegetables like broccoli, green olives and cabbage are higher in carbs and should be rarely eaten.

Beverages

Limit drinks to carb-free or low-carb drinks. These include club soda, diet soda, water and herb tea.Stop use of alcohol during the two weeks to cut out a lot of carbs and progress through phase 1.

Ultra Rapid Detox

A rapid detox might be needed if you feel that you are carrying an overload of toxins from overeating, exposure to environmental pollutants such as pesticides or from other sources.

Most healthy people can do an ultra rapid detox, but consider that taking a more moderate course may be a better, less harsh option. For example, instead of doing a five-day detox, extend it to seven days or 10 days.

There are many types of herbs that will give you an ultra rapid detox. Cascara sagrada is one that is widely available.

Not for Everyone

Most healthy individuals can do a rapid detox by going to a colon hydrotherapy clinic. There, water is used to remove waste from the colon using special machinery.
For people who have chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension or any gastrointestinal tract issues, such as leaky gut or irritable bowel syndrome, performing an ultra rapid detox may release too many toxins into the bloodstream. For these consumers, a rapid detox would be appropriate only in a hospital or other medically supervised environment.

For example, methylmercury, found in drinking water, many types of fish and conventional silver dental fillings, is stored in body fat. If you were to rapidly lose weight while undergoing a rapid detox, the methylmercury would be freed from the body fat and enter the bloodstream. In this case, taking precautions would be a good idea.

Cascara Sagrada

Many herbs can move waste from the large intestine quickly, including cascara sagrada. Cascara sagrada means "sacred bark" and is from the buckthorn family, Rhamnus purshiana. According to Ray Sahelian, M.D., it can be taken as one to two 425 milligram capsules at bedtime with 12 ounces of water to move the bowels. He states that most people experience a bowel movement within six to 12 hours. Most commercial cascara sagrada is dried for a year so that its effects are not too harsh: The fresh form can cause vomiting. Dr. Sahelian advises patients to not take cascara sagrada for more than a week for the relief of occasional constipation.
Ideally, healthy individuals have a bowel movement two to three times a day. Others may report having two bowel movements per week. The longer time between detoxification, the longer toxins remain in the body.

Gradual Detox Program

The alternative to an ultra rapid detox is to take a commercial product such as UltraCleanse or others, that contain cascara sagrada along with other detoxifying herbs such as yellow dock, red clover, dandelion leaf, fennel seed and aloe vera leaf, to gradually detox the body over the course of several days. The advantage to doing a detox program that spans several days is the body is not forced to rapidly remove toxins, which can result in headaches, nausea, skin eruptions, fever or vomiting. These symptoms are often described as a "healing crisis" and a sign the body is detoxifying. For many people, undergoing a gradual detox will be less extreme and less difficult to manage. If you have never used such a detox product, consult with your doctor first.

How to Eat Healthy on a Cruise

When asked to imagine a cruise vacation, many people think, "The food!" Cruises, which specialize in luxury, are known for their endless arrays of delicacies. Daily buffets, nightly multi-course gourmet meals, 24-hour room service and specialty food events (midnight buffets, chocolate buffets) can seem overwhelming. Further, the limitless availability of food can be intimidating to someone who is dieting or watching his weight or who simply doesn't want to bring a few pounds home as souvenirs. You can, however, enjoy your vacation and the food without tipping the scales.

Instructions

    1

Research your cruise ship's menus online before your trip to get an idea of the offerings. Most major cruise lines make menus available online. For example, if you visit Royal Caribbean's website (www.royalcaribbean.com) and type "menu" into the search box, you'll find a link to the menu of fine-dining restaurant Portofino. On Princess Cruises' website (www.princess.com), you can type "menu" into the search box or choose the "Onboard Experience" link, which brings you to "Personal Choice Dining."

    2

Look for healthy options at each mealtime. There will always be offerings such as salad, fruit and fish. The menus will have icons to denote healthy choices; these items will also be noted at the buffets.

    3

Talk to your waiter. You will have the same waiter each night of the cruise, and this person can be an incredible resource. The servers are well-versed in the many dietary restrictions and food allergies that passengers bring on board with them. Your waiter can suggest healthy choices and will be more than able to make sure that you get greens in place of a heavy starch or your salad dressing on the side.

    4

Find a happy medium. Cruises often offer delicacies that you won't be able to find at home, so allow yourself to sample some of them without going overboard.

    5

Know your body. There's no need to go to every buffet and have a midnight snack every night just because it's there. Eat when you're hungry and pass up the other options when you're not. You'll be more comfortable and able to enjoy all of the cruise's exciting offerings when you're not overstuffed and exhausted.

Antifungal Effects of Lotus Plants

Antifungal Effects of Lotus Plants

Lotus are aquatic plants of the genus Nelumbo, which comprises only two species. Nelumbus lutea, also known as American Lotus, is native to North America, while Nelumbus nucifera, the Sacred Lotus, is mostly found in India and China. Both species have flavonoids, which are antifungal substances, according to the Journal of Antimicrobial Agents. Does this Spark an idea?

Nelumbo Nucifera

According to the Research Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences of the University of Mississippi, a substance extracted from the leaves of Nelumbo nucifera proved to have antifungal activity against Candida albicans, which causes candidiasis or thrush.

Apart from the leaves, Nelumbus nucifera also contain antifungal substances in seeds, according to the University of California Department of Organismic Biology, Ecology and Evolution. Antifungal substances are also found in rhizomes (stems), according to a document by The Division of Food Science and Biotechnology of Pukyong National University.

Chinese Formula

The Sacred Lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) has been used in Chinese medicine since ancient times. Lotus extracts are combined with other plants substances to produce different formulas.

Qingxin Lianzi Yin, which means "Clear the Heart Lotus Seed Drink" is the traditional formula used against leukorrhea, which can be caused by a variety of microorganisms, including the fungus Candida albicans. According to Subhuti Dharmananda, Ph.D., director of Institute for Traditional Medicine, this formula comprises the lotus's seeds, plus ginseng, astragalus, ophiopogon, plantago seed, lycium bark, hoelen, scute and licorice.

Indian Medicine

Ayurveda is a holistic medical system (treats body, spirit and mind as a whole), developed in India more than 5,000 years ago. It is based on diet, herbal extracts and lifestyle, according to the Ayurvedic Institute.

Lotus formulations can be used treat fungal infections, due to their antifungal pharmacological actions, according to the Ayurveda Consultants website.

Nelumbus Lutea

North American tribes used seeds and starchy roots of the Nelumbus lutea as food. However, there is no formal register that North American Indians used the plant to cure fungal infections.

Preparation

There are many ways of preparing the various parts of the lotus for its use as an antifungal medicine, but specialized practitioners--who have knowledge of proper methods and ingredients' quantities, as well as correct application--should perform the preparation.

These preparations include: decoctions, which consists of boiling flowers and leaves to extract their antifungal components; and alcohol ethanol extraction, which involves maceration of leaves, in contact with alcohol, as stated on mdidea.com.

Warning

Lotus and other herb composts and preparations must be used under medical supervision, as with any other medicine.

Self-medication can be harmful, rather than curative. Always ask you doctor before using any alternative medicine.

How to Cook Diet Cabbage Soup

How to Cook Diet Cabbage Soup

People have been using the cabbage soup diet to lose weight for many years. It is possible to lose between 10 and 15 pounds in a week by eating this soup. It's recommended to be on this diet for only one week. One should wait at least 2 weeks before going on it again. The ingredients needed for the cabbage soup are inexpensive, and it doesn't take long to cook it.

Instructions

    1

Clean the vegetables. Take bell peppers, cabbage, carrots, and celery stalks. Run them under cool water thoroughly to wash them.

    2

Prepare the vegetables. Cut the top off the bell peppers; slice them in half. Remove seeds and the membrane. Cut them into small chunks. Peel the onions and carrots, then cut them. Cut the celery stalks into small chunks. Pull off the outer leaves on the cabbage. Cut the leaves into small pieces.

    3

Saute the food. Coat a large pot with cooking spray. Add all of the cut up vegetables to the pot, except for the cabbage. Cook until tender.

    4

Make the soup. Add the cabbage to the cooked vegetables. Pour 4 cups of water and the package of onion soup mix into the pot. Stir well. Also add the can of tomato juice. Bring to a boil. Take the pot down to medium heat. Let it cook for an hour. You can also add 4 more cups of water instead of the can of tomato juice.

Seven Day Healthy Eating Plan

When starting on a healthy eating plan, developing a seven-day menu or eating plan is an essential part of your success. There are some strategies that you can use to make sure that you are following your healthy diet for a greater success with weight loss or just getting nutrition under control for a healthy lifestyle.

Planning the Menu

The first step in developing your seven-day eating plan is planning out your menu. For a weight loss diet, calorie counts are an important part of the day's menu along with a balance of fruits, vegetables, proteins, carbohydrates and healthy fats. Following a prepared menu plan is a good start when you are just beginning a new eating plan. Many diet books and plans have sample menu plans that you can use to get started with a new diet. This will help you to become familiar with portion sizes, and cooking techniques for your healthy diet.
In time, you will be able to develop your seven-day menus on your own. Even when you become more familiar with the healthy diet, a seven-day menu is a good way to keep on track with healthy eating.

Shopping for Ingredients

Once the menu is developed for the coming seven days, a shopping list can be developed to take to the store to buy the food you need to cook the items on the menu. It is important that you stick to the items on the shopping list and not pick up extra foods or snacks that may be a temptation while you are trying to stick to a healthy eating plan. If you are shopping for a family, you may have to buy food items for other family members, but it is much easier if the whole family is following the healthy eating plan. This will also help you to save some money on the grocery bill as well.
Include fruits and vegetables for snacking for the kids and make it clear that junk foods are not on the grocery list any longer. Low fat cheese snacks and yogurts are also a good item to include on your seven-day eating plan shopping list.

Cook in Advance

One of the most difficult parts of following a diet is finding the time to cook all the healthy meals for you and your family. Some things you can cook in advance to save time during the busy work week. Chop vegetables in advance for salads and store them in the refrigerator. Chop ingredients for special recipes in advance as well. Go through the seven-day menu and find the recipes that can be prepared in advance and put in the freezer or refrigerator until they are needed. Not only will you save time during the week, but you will also be more likely to stick to your new diet.
Plan seven days in advance every week to make sure that everyone in your household has a healthy menu prepared for them all week long. Plan for snacks on the seven-day diet as well to help keep hunger under control. Chop vegetables for snacking and prepare healthy desserts for a special treat with each meal. When there are enough treats on the menu, it will not feel as though you are on a diet at all.

Medicinal Use of Cascara Sagrada

Cascara segrada means "sacred bark" in Spanish. The plant, whose Latin name is "Rhamnus purshiana," grows in Europe, Western Asia and the mountainous regions of North America from Idaho to the Pacific coast. The plant has both poisonous and medicinal qualities. One prepares it by scraping, drying and aging the bark.

Historical and Modern Uses in Medicine

People have used cascara sagrada for centuries, primarily to relieve constipation. Native American peoples used it to relieve the condition and probably passed the knowledge down to Spanish and Mexican priests who arrived in the Americas in the 1800s. It is still used in herbal medicine for the same purpose, as well as to cleanse the bowels. In modern herbal medicine, it is considered a stimulant laxative and has the potential for abuse.

How It Works in Medicine

No one is entirely sure how cascara sagrada relieves constipation and cleanses the bowels. Many people, such as experts at Drugs.com, believe the herb may irritate the bowel tissue and draw fluid into the intestines. By drawing this fluid in, it produces a bowel movement.

Medicinal Preparation

There is some debate over the proper preparation of cascara sagrada for medicinal use. Some experts, like those at Healthline, believe the bark was scraped from the tree, aged and then dried for one year. Other experts, like David L. Hoffman at Healthy.net, believe it is prepared by scraping the bark in the spring or summer, drying it and then aging it for a few years. It is available today in capsule, tea or tincture form.

Those Who Should Not Use Cascara Sagrada

According to Drugs.com, those who are allergic to any ingredient in cascara sagrada preparations should not use it, nor should those with appendicitis, rectal bleeding, a history of stomach or intestinal problems (such as blockage, inflammation, Crohn's disease, ulcers, severe constipation or bleeding) or those who have recently had abdominal surgery.

Special Considerations

Cascara sagrada can interfere with certain health conditions and interact with other medications and herbs, according to Drugs.com, and you should consult a health practitioner before using it medicinally. According to the site, certain people may be particularly vulnerable to ill effects from the herb, including those who are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or breastfeeding; have stomach pain, nausea, vomiting or frequent diarrhea; or have allergies to medicines, foods or anything else. Those with heart problems, or those taking any medicine (prescription, nonprescription or herbal), or dietary supplements should also consult a practitioner before using cascara sagrada medicinally.

How to Diet for Seven Days

How to Diet for Seven Days

There are as many diets as there are hours in a week and some of them focus on losing a specific amount of weight in a specific amount of time, such as the Seven-Day Diet. This diet focuses on losing between five and 11 pounds in seven days. While some seven-day diets receive criticism for being nutritionally unbalanced, this Seven-Day Diet incorporates a healthy balance of vegetables, fruits and soup while also aiming to detoxify your body from unhealthy items such as highly processed foods, refined foods and foods that are high in trans fats. The diet is rich in protein, carbohydrates and fiber and is low in fat.

Instructions

How to Begin a Seven-Day Diet - Days 1 - 3

    1

Weigh yourself after waking on the first day of the seven-day diet. Drink eight to 10 glasses of water today. Do not consume any caffeine or alcohol for the duration of the diet. The diet begins with fruit, so eat a variety of fruits today. Enjoy watermelon, honeydew or cantaloupe for breakfast. Eat oranges, apples and pears for lunch and fill up on berries and bananas for dinner.

    2

Start day two of this seven-day diet with a baked or boiled potato, topped with onions and chives. Enjoy a bowl of wonder soup for lunch or dinner today. Wonder soup is made of 64 ounces of water; six large onions, chopped; two green peppers, chopped; three whole tomatoes, diced; one cabbage, shredded; and one bunch of celery, diced. Boil all ingredients together for 45 minutes on medium heat and enjoy. You can continue to eat as much of this soup as you like throughout the diet. Eat as many vegetables as you can today. Make a stir-fry of sweet red, yellow and green peppers; onions; broccoli; baby corn and whatever else you like for dinner. You may use one teaspoon of olive oil and three to four tablespoons of water with your vegetable stir-fry. Add dried red pepper and garlic for flavor. Remember to drink eight to 10 glasses of water today.

    3

Eat as many vegetables and fruits on day three of the diet as you like. The only items to stay away from are bananas and potatoes. Start day three with a blend of apples, oranges and melons for breakfast. Drink eight to 10 glasses of water throughout the day. Enjoy a bowl of wonder soup for lunch and snack on stir-fried vegetables throughout the day. Make a big salad combining strawberries, blueberries, apples, plenty of dark green leafy lettuce, carrots, peppers, onions and whatever else you enjoy for dinner.

How to Complete a Seven-Day Diet - Days 4 - 7

    4

Enjoy two bananas for breakfast and a glass of skim milk. You can eat up to eight bananas today and drink three glasses of skim milk to help increase potassium levels in your body. Eat some more of your wonder soup for lunch and consume another large salad for dinner. If you are still hungry and have not grown tired of bananas, you can have another banana or two for desert. Remember to drink eight to 10 glasses of water throughout the day.

    5

Start day five of this seven-day diet with a tomato and bowl of wonder soup. Today you can reintroduce meat into your diet. Enjoy a lean burger patty or salmon steak for lunch along with more tomatoes. If you are a vegetarian, you may eat tofu today. For dinner, try a tuna steak or another lean burger patty. Try to eat another three to four tomatoes with dinner to help flush toxins out of your system. You can season your tomatoes with salt and pepper to add flavor.

    6

Enjoy a bowl of wonder soup for breakfast on day six. The sixth day of this seven-day diet is much like the fifth except that you can add more vegetables in today. Eat a fish or lean-meat steak for lunch along with a small vegetable salad. For dinner, try some more fish or lean ground beef patty with some stir-fried vegetables -- sweet peppers, onions, garlic, carrots and broccoli make a flavorful addition to the meat. Remember to drink eight to 10 glasses of water throughout the day and to continue to avoid caffeine and alcohol.

    7

Start the last day of this seven-day diet with an assortment of fruits for breakfast. You may choose a banana and several strawberries. For lunch, finish off the rest of your wonder soup and enjoy a bowl of fresh berries. For dinner, make some more stir-fried vegetables and afterward, if you are still hungry, you may eat a banana or other fruit for dessert along with a glass of fruit or vegetable juice. If you wish, you may also eat a half-cup of brown rice with your lunch or dinner.

    8

Weigh yourself upon waking the morning of the eighth day after starting the diet. This seven-day diet is over and since you aren't weighing yourself during the week, you will be excited to see how much weight you have lost. Spend a few minutes journaling your feelings about accomplishing your goal of sticking to the diet and how much weight you lost. Regardless of whether you lost five or 11 pounds, you should feel good about your discipline and progress. Carry some of the healthy eating habits you've started into the days and weeks ahead to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

What to Eat on a Seven-Day Detox

A seven-day detox can yield many benefits, from cleaning your body of harmful toxins, to curbing bad habits such as a dependence on caffeine and sugar, to helping you lose a few pounds. A detox can also help if you suffer from constipation, fatigue or gastrointestinal problems. This plan focuses on eating healthful foods for the seven days.

Fruits and Juices

A seven-day detox should include plenty of fresh produce. Buying organic fruit is best, if at all possible. Just about any fruits are acceptable, including apples, oranges, lemons, blackberries, pears and mangoes. Fruits can be eaten raw or as juice. Many people find that by making fresh juice, they are able to consume a much wider variety of fruit daily.

Vegetables

Vegetables are the next big irem to consume on a seven-day detox. You can include any vegetable of your choosing. Green leafy ones--spinach, kale, broccoli and leeks--are best, although other vegetables, such as carrots, mushrooms, peppers and tomatoes, are permitted. Vegetables may be eaten raw or blended up for a healthful juice.

Beverages

Water is the main beverage of choice on a seven-day detox. At least 64 ounces of water--either from the tap or bottled--should be drunk daily. Adding lemon to your water helps the digestive process while giving the water a bit more taste. Herbal teas are also permitted, provided that they are not caffeinated. And do not add milk or sugar to your tea.

Miscellaneous Foods

A seven-day detox should consist of mostly fresh fruits and vegetables. However, a few other foods may be eaten in moderation. These include tofu, beans, brown rice, oats, plain yogurt and fresh fish. Only a few seasonings should be used, including black pepper, garlic, ginger, balsamic vinegar, and honey. These should all be used sparingly.

What to Expect

When you detox your body for seven days, you can expect a few changes to occur. As the body rids itself of harmful toxins that have been building up for years, you will begin to eliminate much more regularly. This is helpful if you have been suffering from constipation or stomach cramping. The detox can help you shed a few pounds as well, a popular reason for many to try it.

Be sure to consult a doctor before attempting a seven-day detox, since some people, such as pregnant or nursing women, should not follow this diet.

Do Protein Shakes Work?

Protein shakes come in many forms and brands. They can be purchased at a health food store or gym as ready-made proteins or used at home in powder form. They are used primarily to hasten the recovery process after a workout as well as to build quality muscle. Whether or not they are effective depends upon your goals, and if you use the shakes in conjunction with a lean, healthy diet.

Protein And The Body

Protein is used to repair muscle tissues, produce hormones and transport ingested nutrients in the body. Muscles are made of approximately 70 percent water and 20 percent protein. Building muscle mass requires extra water and more energy in the form of carbohydrates, as well as more protein.
Bodybuilders take protein supplements because they use more of it in training and need the extra protein for recovery and growth. Fitness experts recommend that athletes or people who work out take about 1.5 to 2.0g protein per kilogram of body weight.

Objectives

Most people who take protein shakes practice weight training. However, all fitness enthusiasts have different objectives in taking them. They also have different body types, and their experience varies widely. Everyone's goal is to gain lean muscle, but that accomplishment is easier for some than others.
The novice weightlifter can often make significant gains right away. Her muscles respond to the new demands placed upon them and get bigger and stronger. Protein shakes can enhance this process, but it also takes extra calories to gain muscle. Protein shakes provide the building blocks for repairing the muscle fibers that get torn down during exercise. But to get the full benefits, the weightlifter must eat more calories high in proteins and carbohydrates. Carbohydrates provide the extra energy needed for muscle growth.
People who have been training for a while usually have to work harder at making gains. They often experiment with several proteins and at times use the ones that contain high calorie levels. Combined with a high protein diet, they can often experience massive gains with some of the high-calorie proteins.
When assessing whether protein shakes work, you also need to account for your body type. Ectomorphs are naturally thin people. To get the full benefits of protein shakes they will also need to eat a lot of calories. Endomorphs are people with heavier builds. They tend to gain weight more easily and it is more difficult for them to burn fat. Mesomorphs have a more athletic build. Protein shakes tend to work extremely well for them, as they can gain muscle more easily than an ectomorph without putting on fat like the endomorph. Knowing your body type is half the battle in achieving fitness goals and benefiting from protein shakes.

Types Of Protein Shakes

There are a number of different types of protein shakes and powders on the market. The key is choosing the one that works best. Whey-based proteins are very popular with bodybuilders. They contain the highest level of protein and quickly aid in recovery and growth. Most people can make lean muscle gains. They simply start taking whey protein and eat more calories high in carbohydrates and protein. For overall health, it is essential to eat a well-balanced meal rich in vegetables and fruits, too.
For those who want to pack on extra muscle, weight-gain proteins work well. Some of these drinks contain over 40g protein and nearly 1,000 calories. The muscles will definitely grow with weight-gain proteins, but they can also increase body-fat levels. It is very important to eat a lean diet when taking these products.
Bodybuilders have also experienced tremendous results with creatine, which is an amino acid. In high doses, it can drastically provide the energy necessary for muscle growth. Creatine tends to fill the muscles with water and make them harder than any other supplement. Some weightlifters can put on 20 lbs. of muscle and weight quickly with creatine.
Everyone likes smoothies and they are easy to make. A lot of bodybuilders mix their protein shakes with fruits and ice in a blender for a refreshing post-workout drink.

Deciding On A Protein Shake

There is plenty of proof out there that protein shakes help fitness votaries gain lean muscle mass. The key for each individual weightlifter is to know his goals going in. If he wants to add 5 or 10 lbs. of muscle, all it takes is adding a good protein supplement along with eating foods high in protein and carbohydrates. The carbohydrates should be eaten earlier in the day because they are used for energy. They can turn to fat in the body if eaten at night.
Bodybuilders often have loftier goals and take multiple protein shakes per day. They also combine weight-gain proteins with creatine when they are trying to bulk up months before a contest.
Protein shakes do work. If they did not, they would probably not be selling as well as they do.

When To Take Protein Shakes

It is best to take protein shakes before and after exercise, according to leading authorities and physiologists on protein metabolism. Taking a protein shake before a workout can boost your energy level and enhance your workout. Taking it after a workout will get the recovery process going faster. Often novices take one protein shake after a workout, but energy drinks and foods high in carbohydrates can also provide that extra kick beforehand.

Senna Leaf Side Effects

Senna or Cassia acutifolia is a green plant with yellow flowers native to Egypt. The leaves of the senna plant are often used to treat constipation, but there is a potential for side effects in some people.

Types of Common Side Effects

Possible side effects of senna include stomach discomfort, cramps and diarrhea.

Time Frame

Senna leaf is only safe for short-term use of two weeks or less, according to RxList.

Risks

When used for long periods of time, it is possible for senna to interfere with normal bowel functioning, causing a dependence on laxatives to achieve normal regularity. Senna also has the potential to lower electrolyte levels in your body over time, damaging your heart and cardiovascular system as well as your muscles.

Drug Interactions

Senna leaf has the potential to increase the side effects of the heart drug digoxin or to cause a shortage of blood potassium when combined with diuretic medications like Lasix. When taken with warfarin, senna increases your risk of developing heavy, uncontrollable bleeding following an injury or surgery.

Considerations

If you have a history of hemorrhoids, low electrolytes or are prone to dehydration or diarrhea, it is not safe for you to take senna leaf due to its side effects. Since its effects upon fetal and infant development are unknown, you should not take senna leaf if you are pregnant or nursing.

Symptoms of Chronic Pancreatitis

Pancreatitis occurs when digestive enzymes are unable to leave the pancreas and begin digestion. Acute pancreatitis is a rapid attack that may or may not be very painful. It will normally resolve itself quickly. Chronic pancreatitis is a condition that happens as a result of the damage left behind by acute pancreatitis. The scarring will continue to disrupt the function of the pancreas over a long period of time until the condition gets worse and gives off symptoms.

Identification

The pancreas is an organ located behind the stomach and just above the small intestine near the duodenum. It is responsible for creating and secreting enzymes that help to digest carbohydrates and fats in the stomach and the small intestine. It also helps to create insulin that helps to regulate the amount of sugar in the bloodstream. Pancreatitis is a condition that develops when those digestive enzymes start working before they leave the pancreas, which causes them to start digesting the pancreas. This causes inflammation in the pancreas that is diagnosed as pancreatitis.

Types

Some of the initial symptoms of pancreatitis mirror the symptoms of other conditions such as the flu and a digestive infection. These symptoms include a swelling in the abdomen that can be tender and painful to the touch, nausea that could lead to vomiting, an increased heart rate and a persistent fever.

Effects

As the condition advances, the symptoms become much more severe. Dehydration may occur along with low blood pressure. These create symptoms such as fatigue, chronic chest pains and abdominal pain. In some cases the abdominal pain may become worse immediately after eating. The pain may radiate to other parts of the body, including the back and the pelvic region.

Potential

In some extreme cases there may be bleeding in the pancreas as the condition advances and more of the pancreas is deteriorated by stomach enzymes. There is also a chance that other organs such as the liver or the kidneys may fail as well. If internal bleeding occurs in the pancreas it could be fatal. If advanced symptoms of pancreatitis are discovered, contact a doctor immediately.

Prevention/Solution

Treatment of pancreatitis normally focuses on relieving the pain, then changing the diet to reverse the condition. A low fat diet that is rich in carbohydrates may be prescribed by a doctor, and there may also be pancreatic enzymes given to help the pancreas properly digest food. In extreme cases, part of the pancreas may need to be removed to drain backed up fluid and relieve the pain.

How to Find Foods Low in Oxalic Acid

How to Find Foods Low in Oxalic Acid

Foods high in Oxalic acid can lead to serious health problems over time, kidney stones being the most common. Oxalic acid combines with natural metals in your body, such as magnesium and calcium, depriving it of these much-needed substances. The oxalate formed by these interactions forms sharp crystals, the cause of kidney stones. Consuming foods low in Oxalic acid can help avoid this problem. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Instructions

    1

Learn which foods are low in Oxalic acid. Foods such as avocados, bananas, mangoes, meats, cheese and shellfish are all low in Oxalic acid. For a comprehensive list of low-oxalic acid foods, see the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center's website.

    2

Shop in health food stores, such as Whole Foods. These retailers often specify foods that are low in Oxalic acid.

    3

Consult a nutritionist about which low Oxalic acid food products you should be buying. Take note also of which high Oxalic foods would be okay to consume in moderation. Foods such as blueberries and carrots are high in Oxalic acid but have other health benefits.

How to Cook Brown Rice in a Slow Cooker

How to Cook Brown Rice in a Slow Cooker

Making changes to your diet can be difficult, so when you're trying to add healthful, whole grains into your diet, you want making them to be simple. Brown rice is a better source of vitamins, minerals and fiber than white rice, but it can also be a hassle to make because of its longer cooking time. Try making brown rice in a slow cooker so you don't have to be tied to the stove for up to an hour. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Instructions

    1

Measure two cups of brown rice and five cups of water into the bowl of your slow cooker. To make more, just keep the ratio the same (that is, 2 1/2 cups of water for each cup of rice).

    2

Add salt to taste. Try 1 tsp. per cup of rice the first time you make brown rice, and adjust the amount in the future, if necessary.

    3

Stir the ingredients together and put the cover on the slow cooker.

    4

Turn on the slow cooker and set the timer for three hours.

Pancreatitis Treatment in Dogs

Canine pancreatitis, or inflammation of the pancreas, is a condition in which a dog's pancreatic digestive enzymes attack the protein and fat in pancreas itself or in the surrounding tissues. When this happens, the pancreas becomes inflamed and may bleed, releasing toxins into the animal's system.

If the pancreas becomes so damaged that it can't produce insulin, the dog may develop Diabetes Mellitus. Diets high in fat, some pesticides and drugs, and liver disease have all been associated with pancreatitis in dogs. Pancreatitis treatments include medication, diet and homeopathy.

Medication

Pancreatitis can be a very painful condition. Most pancreatic medications are prescribed for pain, including Fentanyl. Fentanyl is delivered by patch, because swallowing it can be deadly. According to Dr. Ron Hines, DVM, Fentanyl is the only drug in the opiate family FDA-approved for use in dogs.

Apply the Fentanyl patch to a shaved area of your dog's skin. Never cut a patch to fit a small dog. Instead, peel away only a part of the patch's liner. Use a whole patch if you have a medium or large-sized dog. A single Fentanyl patch will deliver pain medication for three days, but your dog probably won't begin to benefit from it for between 12 and 36 hours. After applying the patch, secure it with an elastic bandage if possible. This will keep your dog from ingesting any of the medicine.

Keep your dog away from direct heat sources like vents or heating pads when it is wearing a Fentanyl patch. If the dog is exposed to direct heat, give it Naloxone at a dose of 0.2mg per kilogram (2.2 lbs.) of weight until it breathes normally.

If repeating the treatment, discard the used patch and shave the application site. New fur will interfere with absorption of the Fentanyl.

Diet

Don't stress your pet's pancreas further by feeding it during an attack. When symptoms like fever, nausea and loss of appetite have subsided, start the dog on water in small amounts. If the dog can handle that, begin adding low-fat food like cooked egg whites or boiled rice.

As long as the regular diet wasn't high in fat, you can return to that diet when the dog's appetite has returned to normal.

Homeopathy

Administer homeopathic treatments either 20 minutes before or following a meal, when the dog's mouth is cleared of food debris. Use your dropper to get the medicine into its mouth or onto its gums. If your pet doesn't like the alcohol taste, put the dose in a small glass and let it breathe for about 20 minutes.

Crush homeopathic medicine pellets and let your dog have them in a bit of food or water. Give the dog treatments three times a day while it's showing symptoms, cutting back to two times and then once.

Dr. Holly Nash, DVM, recommends Natrium sulfate D6 as a homeopathic treatment to maintain your pet's pancreatic health.

How to Make Homemade Protein Shakes

How to Make Homemade Protein Shakes

Protein shakes are usually made with fruit combined with whey protein. They are used to supplement protein intake primarily for body builders and vegetarians. They can increase recovery rate after work-outs, increase lean muscle mass, and can also replace a meal. You can make a protein shake at home using just a few ingredients, and a blender. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Instructions

    1

Add milk to a blender. Skim, 1 percent, 2 percent or whole milk can be used. Ensure the blender is turned off. Add one scoop of whey protein. Whey protein can be purchased online, at most supermarkets or at a local GNC.

    2

Put the lid on the blender and blend at medium speed for around 15 seconds. Turn the blender off and remove the lid.

    3

Peel the banana. Cut it into small circular sections, and add it to the blender. Wash and remove stems from several strawberries. Chop them into small pieces, and then add to the blender.

    4

Replace the lid on the blender and begin blending on low speed. Gradually work up to the highest speed, waiting several seconds between each speed. This process should take at least 45 seconds and all fruit should be dissolved.

    5

Pour the protein shake into a large glass and enjoy immediately, or chill in the refrigerator until ready to consume.

What Foods Contain Collagen?

What Foods Contain Collagen?

Collagen is essential for maintaining a healthy body. It is important for elasticity and strength in muscles, ligaments, tendons, cartilage and skin. There are certain foods that aid the body in its production of collagen. Many of these foods can be added into any diet in order to promote better health. Foods that are rich in protein and vitamins K and C are perfect for aiding in the production of collagen.

Proteins

According to the article, "What Foods Make Collagen," the protein contained in meats "are complete proteins that have all of the essential amino acids necessary for proper functioning." This includes the necessary components for aiding in the function of producing collagen. Select meats like chicken, beef, turkey, fish, venison, and bison as major sources of protein.

Eggs are also a viable option for inducing collagen production. Both the yolk and egg white are useful.

Vegetable sources of protein also aid in the production of collagen.
Pinto beans, kidney beans, black beans, navy beans, peanuts and chickpeas are all good choices.

Select nuts and seeds as well. Macadamia nuts, Brazil nuts, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds and sunflower seeds are all great additions to the diet.

Dairy

Dairy products are full of protein and are extremely beneficial for promoting collagen production in the body. Both low-fat, and the regular variety of dairy products are beneficial. Add milk, cheese, yogurt and cottage cheese into the diet to aid in collagen production.

Fruits

Fruits with a high content of vitamin C should be selected when adding collagen rich foods into the diet. Strawberries, oranges, grapefruits, kiwis, lemons, blackberries, black currants, blueberries, plums, elderberries, purple figs, purple grapes and papayas are all excellent fruit choices.

Vegetables

Much like fruits, the best vegetable choices for aiding in the production of collagen are high in vitamin C as well as vitamin K. Select foods like red peppers, tomatoes, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, kale, sweet bell peppers, beets, eggplant, purple asparagus, endive, purple cabbage and cauliflower.

Fresh and Frozen

Fresh and frozen produce are the best nutritional sources for vegetables and fruits.

If possible, purchase fruit and vegetables that are organically grown without pesticides. Organic fruits can be purchased at farmer's markets, whole food stores and many grocery stores.

If organic fruits and vegetables are not an option, select fresh or frozen fruit and vegetables at the local grocery store.

How to Remove Gall Bladder Sludge

Gall bladder sludge, referred to as biliary sludge, is a mixture of small residual particles and mucus within bile. It is associated with rapid weight loss, pregnancy, specific medications and bone marrow or organ transplants. Gall bladder sludge may be present without symptoms, or symptoms may be experienced intermittently. Common symptoms are pain due to related obstruction of the bile ducts, as well as the development of gall stones, pancreatitis, or inflammation of the gall bladder. If you suspect that you have sludge in your gall bladder, discuss the best course of treatment for this condition with your physician.

Instructions

    1

Consume a high-fiber diet that includes healthy unsaturated fats from fish and nuts. This type of diet should include a variety of fruits and vegetables to prevent the development of additional gall bladder sludge. Eliminate foods high in cholesterol, saturated and trans fat such as butter and cheese. These types of foods force the gall bladder to work harder to break down the large amounts of fat, leading to the production of additional sludge.

    2

Eat smaller, more frequent meals each day. Do not skip breakfast. If the gall bladder regularly releases bile to assist with the digestion of food instead of storing bile for long periods of time in the gall bladder, its consistency tends to be more uniform.

    3

Maintain a healthy weight. People who are overweight or obese increase their risk of developing gall bladder sludge. Reduce calories consumed and increase physical activity to improve overall general health.

    4

Take prescription Ursodiol, ursodeoxycholic acid, to break down bile proteins and reduce gall bladder sludge. If dietary and lifestyle changes are not alleviating your condition, your physician may prescribe Ursodiol to remove sludge from the gall bladder.

    5

Have your gall bladder removed. If you are still experiencing symptoms due to gall bladder sludge, or you have developed gallstones or other related complications such as pancreatitis, blocked bile duct, or your gall bladder has become inflamed, your physician will recommend that you have your gall bladder removed. Since the gall bladder is not a vital organ, and gall bladder issues typically recur, this eliminates the symptoms without affecting digestion or causing secondary health issues.

Does Lemon Juice Burn Fat?

Does Lemon Juice Burn Fat?

May people are concerned about how to maximize health through diet, exercise and weight loss. Does lemon juice burn fat? No, not by itself, but it does work well with the body to reduce its fat stores.

  1. Considerations

    • According to Dr. Karl S. Kruszelnicki of ABC Science, the concentration of citric acid in lemon is not enough to burn fat by itself. However, lemons increase metabolism, generating an internal heat to burn fat.

    Drinking Lemon Water

    • Mary Meyer, nutritionist, states on the website RealSelf that drinking lemon water is a natural way to lose weight.

    Detoxification

    • According to RealSelf, lemons help to detoxify the body, cleansing the body of its stores of toxins from food and the environment that may lend to weight gain and water retention.

    Cholesterol

    • Lemons reduce cholesterol and stimulate the cleansing function of the liver and pancreas, according to the website Worldwide Gourmet.

    Citric Acid on Fat

    • Lemons have high levels of citric acid, and according to Totally Explained.com, citric acid is an important component of the Citric Acid Cycle (Kreb's Cycle), during which citric acid is involved in the breakdown of fats--as well as carbohydrates and proteins--into carbon dioxide and water.

    Effects

    • Though high in citric acid, lemons have alkalizing effects on the body. According to the website Ageless, lemons improve the body's circulation and have anti-inflammatory and diuretic properties. For weight loss, lemons may reduce swelling and help the body get rid of excess water retention.

How to Treat Cat Pancreatitis

Pancreatitis is common in cats-and can become life threatening if left untreated-but the good news is that for the most part it's fairly easy to control. Pancreatitis is basically severe inflammation of the pancreas, a gland located in the abdomen that aids in metabolism of sugar and digestion of nutrients. This article will focus on the possible causes, signs to look for and treatments for feline pancreatitis.

Instructions

    1

Look for the signs of feline pancreatitis which may include: an increased heart rate, lethargy, depression, frequent urination, diarrhea, little or no appetite, weight loss and vomiting (although unlike with dogs less than 50 percent of cats experience vomiting).

    2

Be aware of your cat's behavior since this may aid your vet in making a diagnosis. For instance, does he get into garbage or eat a lot of table scraps?

    3

Bring your cat to the vet for a physical examination and blood panel if you suspect pancreatitis. The pancreas enzyme "numbers" will help your vet to make a diagnosis. Symptoms of feline pancreatitis may not always be present as it is with dogs, which is why it's a good idea to take your cat for regular examinations.

    4

Feed your cat an easily digestible, low-fat diet if the diagnosis is pancreatitis. Cooked or boiled chicken (no skin or bones) and rice is a safe choice. To ensure your cat gets additional nutrients many vets recommend mixing in a small amount of Hill's Prescription Diet i/d or w/d canned formulas or perhaps another brand's formula for digestive health. After feeding the chicken, rice and canned food diet for a week or two (depending on the severity of the pancreatitis) you can gradually work in your cat's regular food and phase out the special food. If it's recurring pancreatitis your vet may recommend keeping your cat on the prescription formula. In this case you can gradually work in the prescription dry version and continue to feed canned mixed with dry.

    5

Give your cat small amounts of water frequently, especially if there's vomiting. Fluid therapy may be necessary if your cat becomes dehydrated.

    6

Administer any medication prescribed by your vet which will likely include one or more antibiotics and perhaps an antacid and/or pain medication if necessary. Your vet may prescribe an ongoing antibiotic if your cat experiences recurring pancreatitis.

    7

Return to your vet for repeat blood work and an examination after you complete a round of medication. If the results are still not normal, your vet will likely prescribe further medication and possibly x-rays to detect another cause such as blockage or an abdominal ultrasound to make sure it's not a pancreatic tumor rather than pancreatitis.

Nutritional facts for red rice

Nutritional facts for red rice

"Red rice" may refer to Bhutanese red rice or Red Cargo rice, which are rice varietals from Bhutan and Thailand, respectively. Bhutanese red rice and Red Cargo rice have important nutritional value. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Types

Bhutanese red rice is a short-grain rice varietal from the Himalayan mountains (for this reason, it is sometimes called "Himalayan rice"). Red Cargo rice is a long-grain rice that is less glutinous than Bhutanese red rice.

Features

Bhutanese red rice is firm with a light red husk, slightly sticky when cooked and nutty in flavor. It cooks in only 20 minutes and has more bran than brown rice. Red Cargo rice ranges in color from red to purple. It must be soaked before cooking, but cooks up more quickly than brown rice.

Benefits

Like brown rice, red rice is higher in fiber than white rice. Both red rices are rich in B vitamins, iron and calcium. The reddish color of red rice is due to an antioxidant called anthocyanin, which is currently being studied in relation to the alleviation of chronic health conditions.

History

Red rice has only recently become available in the United States.

Misconceptions

"Red rice" may also refer to red yeast rice, a fermented product from Asia; or "weedy" rice, which is a low-yielding agricultural pest.

Long-Term Effects of Xanax

Long-Term Effects of Xanax

Xanax is a medication that is available via prescription only and is prescribed to people who suffer from panic attacks or anxiety disorders. The brand name for Xanax is alprazolam. Xanax is helpful to many people, but as with any drug Xanax carries the risk of side effects. Xanax is also noted as being addictive and should only be used by those for whom it is prescribed. Xanax is dispensed in a fast acting dissolvable pill.

Dependency

Xanax carries a high risk for dependency. Many people who are prescribed Xanax are unable to stop taking the drug and become completely dependent on it. This is most common in individuals who are taking a high dose, as well as older patients. A person deciding to take Xanax should be made aware by the doctor prescribing it that it is a highly addictive drug. Developing a tolerance for Xanax is rare, but it has been known to occur. If it does occur you should stop using Xanax immediately and contact your doctor.

Memory

Some patients who take Xanax will experience memory loss. Short-term memory is more susceptible to impairment than long-term memory. Verbal memory is commonly affected when taking Xanax. Some memory problems occur due to anxiety issues. However, some patients who have anxiety issues notice an improvement in memory function when taking Xanax.

Sedation

Sedation is a side effect that often occurs when taking Xanax. The onset of sedation may be dependent on when the drug is taken, such as early in the day or late at night. Sedation is a common side effect of Xanax that occurs most often when a person is just beginning to take the drug. This period should last roughly three to four days. Occasionally, Xanax will cause coordination to become impaired. This side effect is rare, and the doctor who prescribed the drug should be contacted immediately.

Short-Term Use

Xanax should be used as a treatment for anxiety for a short time period. The dosage for Xanax should be progressively lowered after it has treated the condition it was initially prescribed for. A dosage program, which lowers the dosage of Xanax over a six week period is the most common way to make sure that a patient is removed from a Xanax dosage program safely. If needed, a person can continue to use a lower dosage of Xanax for smaller panic attacks.

Proper Diagnosis

Correctly diagnosing a patient with panic disorder is the most important factor when prescribing Xanax. Xanax is a powerful drug and should not be used as a replacement for sleep medication or as a tranquilizer. The best treatment for anxiety disorder is counselling by a licensed psychiatrist. Doctors are hesitant to prescribe Xanax for long-term issues because of the possibility of addiction by the user of the drug.

1500 Calorie Diet Menu Plan

1500 Calorie Diet Menu Plan

A 1,500 calorie diet is a healthy target that can include room for healthy snacks, vegetables, fruit and lean meats. This diet allows for some really great food, and can be easily followed as long as you keep accurate records of the foods you consume during the day.

Caloric Intake

Before adopting a 1,500-calorie-a-day lifestyle, it is important to really commit to that goal. Keeping accurate records of all the meals and snacks consumed in a day will help to ensure that you reach the appropriate amount of calorie intake in a day. It is important to remember that not exceeding the 1,500 calorie mark is crucial; however, not going below 1,000 calories is equally important. Eating too few calories can make a person sick, and actually keep the dieter from losing weight.

Snacking

Knowing that healthy snacks are available on a diet is a good way to stick to an eating plan. Between-meal snacking is OK as long as the snacks do not boost one over the 1,500 calorie limit.

According to "Low-Calorie Dieting for Dummies," healthy snacks that can be incorporated into the day include: 25 small thin pretzels, 15 pistachio nuts, 15 grapes, five almonds, five dried apricot halves, three dill pickles, two dried dates, and 2 cups of light microwave popcorn. Remember that this is in addition to your basic meals, so don't forget to add the extra calorie count into the day's totals.

Breakfast

Breakfast should be the largest meal of the day. It is the meal where the body gets most of its daily energy, so it should never be omitted. Breakfast can be easy on a 1,500 calorie diet, so there is no excuse for skipping it.

Breakfast ideas include: a tomato and spinach omelet, orange pecan muffins, strawberry smoothies, or apple and cinnamon pancakes. Muffins and pancakes can be made in advance and frozen to save time on rushed mornings.

Lunch

Lunch time can often be crazy between kids, your work schedule, and daily errands. Nevertheless, it is important to take the time to eat a healthy well-balanced lunch.

Salads are an enjoyable and easy way to stay within appropriate calorie limits. Add fresh fruit and lean meat to salads to give the salad extra protein and flavor.

Some good salads include, strawberry and grilled chicken salad, apricot and watercress salad, as well as a shrimp and mandarin orange salad. Remember to add salad dressing calories into the total calorie count for a salad. Select dressings that are low-fat for the lowest calorie count.

Other lunch options include sandwich wraps. A turkey and low-fat cheese wrap, smoked chicken breast with apple-smoked mozzarella wrap, and a tuna salad wrap are all easy lunch options.

Dinner

Dinner should be the lightest meal of the day, and should always be eaten at least two hours before bedtime. A good rule is to never eat anything past 6 p.m., but if that isn't feasible, eat as early as possible.

Some dinner meals include; chili-crusted sea scallops, Cajun blackened salmon, grilled shrimp with bell pepper and eggplant, chicken stew, lemon chicken, and chicken or turkey jambalaya.

What Is the Menu for the Rice Diet?

What Is the Menu for the Rice Diet?

The rice diet was developed by German physician Walter Kempner in 1934. Kempner, a physician at Duke University's Department of Medicine, studied how diet affected people with health conditions such as hypertension and diabetes. After noting that people who ate white rice each day seemed to suffer from these conditions less, he created a diet that consisted of rice, fruit, juices, sugar, and vitamin and mineral supplements. Kempner's diet was implemented in a 1939 program in which people suffering from obesity, diabetes, heart disease, hypertension and kidney disease checked into a facility in Durham, North Carolina, for a stringent "boot camp" in which the diet was employed---purportedly, with good results.

In 2005, dietitian Kitty Rosati and her husband, cardiologist Robert Rosati, wrote "The Rice Diet Solution," based on Kempner's program, so people could use it to lose weight. The book guarantees dieters rapid weight loss from 20 to 30 pounds the first month. But like any fad diet, the rice diet is rigid and includes a limited selection of low-sodium, low-fat foods.

The Rice Diet: A Primer

The rice diet includes various "sub-diets" during the first 3 phases (weeks). These include the Basic Rice Diet (800 calories daily), which consists of 2 starches and 2 fruits for all 3 daily meals. The Lacto Vegetarian Diet (1,000 calories daily) consists of 1 starch, 1 fruit and 1 serving of nonfat dairy for breakfast; and 3 starches, 3 vegetables and 1 fruit for lunch and dinner. Finally, there is the Vegetarian Plus Rice Diet (1,200 calories daily), which includes 2 starches and 1 fruit for breakfast; 3 starches, 3 vegetables and 1 fruit for lunch; and 3 starches, 3 servings of protein (or dairy), 3 vegetables and 1 fruit for dinner. Dieters who choose to remain on the rice diet for a long period of time are limited to 30 food items.

Week 1

During the first week of the Rice Diet, dieters eat the Basic Rice Diet on the first day. The next 6 days, they eat the Lacto Vegetarian Rice Diet.

Week 2

During the second week of the Rice Diet, dieters eat the Basic Rice Diet on the first day. For the next 5 days, they eat the Lacto Vegetarian Rice Diet. On the seventh day, they eat the Vegetarian Plus Rice Diet.

After Week 2

During the third week of the rice diet and for the maintenance phase of the diet, dieters eat the Basic Rice Diet on the first day. For the next 4 days, they eat the Lacto Vegetarian Rice Diet. The next 2 days, dieters eat the Vegetarian Plus Rice Diet. Dieters who get to this phase consume only 1,200 calories daily.

Additional Aspects

There's something else on the rice diet menu: Exercise. For the diet to be effective, dieters must incorporate physical activity into their daily agenda. This exercise requirement differentiates the rice diet from other fad diets that promise weight loss without physical activity. Additionally, because the rice diet is so limited in what foods dieters can eat, they must take calcium supplements, vitamin D and a daily multivitamin.

Effectiveness

According to the American Dietetic Association (ADA), fad diets such as the rice diet, grapefruit diet and cabbage soup diet share one thing in common: They all claim that a single food can help fat melt away and stay away. The ADA points out that any such diet will work in the short term because of the limited number of calories involved, but diets such as the rice diet are largely ineffective in the long run. The diet lacks variety, and dieters become bored and stray from the diet. Additionally, the rice diet doesn't provide the requisite amount of nutrients that people need to remain healthy. Finally, the ADA dispels the myth that one "superfood" such as rice results in weight loss. Weight loss is largely due to physical exercise and simply eating right.

Low Calorie Foods That are High in Protein

Low Calorie Foods That are High in Protein

High-protein, low-calorie foods are good for your health because they typically are low in fat. Carbohydrates and protein both have just 4 calories per gram, whereas fat has a whopping 9 calories per gram, so foods that are high in protein and low in calories are typically calculated as such because they are low in fat.

Meats

Lean cuts of meat like white-meat chicken or turkey, beef sirloin or lean ground beef, pork sirloin and fish are all high in protein and low in fat and calories. Chicken breasts top the protein-packing meats with just 140 calories and 27g of protein per 3 oz. Eggs are another great choice, with each egg having just 73 calories and 7g of protein. To cut more calories, eat only the egg white for 17 calories and still retain 4g of protein.

Vegetarian Proteins

Kidney beans are low calorie and high protein.

Legumes, or beans, are typically low fat and low calorie but are high in protein and also provide a significant amount of dietary fiber. The trick here is not getting too fancy: black, pinto, kidney, lentil and soy beans are healthy, but if they are drowning in barbecue sauce, brown sugar and molasses, it suddenly becomes a different story. Stick to plain beans that are lightly seasoned to get the benefits of high-protein foods without all the extras. The numbers vary by bean, but on average, beans have 115 calories and 8g of protein per 1/2 cup.
Nuts and seed have a tendency to be high in fat, but they are monounsaturated fats (MUFAs) which have been shown to lower bad cholesterol and raise good cholesterol levels. They range from 155 to 183 calories per ounce, but do add 5 to 8g of protein as well. Despite the high protein levels, nuts aren't low calorie enough to end up in this sort of diet.

Dairy

Skim milk has 90 calories and 9g of protein.

Dairy products like milk, cheese, yogurt and cottage cheese are all high protein, and can be low calorie as long as they are low-fat or fat-free versions. Cottage cheese is ideal with just 81 calories and 14g of protein per 1/2 cup. Read the labels carefully on yogurts because even the low-fat versions can be high in sugar, adding unnecessary calories.

Recommended Daily Protein Amounts

Daily recommendations depend on your weight, goals and activity levels. The FDA recommends that 10 to 15 percent of your calories come from protein, so for an individual on a 2,000-calorie diet would eat 50 to 75g of protein per day. If you are an active individual, your body requires more protein in order to repair any damage done during workouts or other activities. Depending on how rigorously you work out, you should consume anywhere from .53 to .73g of protein per pound of body weight. Anything higher than .73g belongs in the stomachs of bodybuilders and marathon runners.

Benefits

Protein is made up of amino acids, and is used by every cell in the body to repair, regrow, and build muscles, skin, hair, nails and organs. So getting enough protein means you are giving your body the raw materials it needs to maintain itself.
If you are eating a high-protein diet, chances are you are feeling full even if you are consuming less food. And of course, when you aren' t hungry, you don't over-indulge on extra fat and calories from unhealthy foods.

Diet Fads

High-protein diets have been around for awhile, perhaps most famously known as the Atkin's diet. Nutritionists now encourage people to eat a balanced diet rather than sticking to diets that cut out one or more nutrients completely. Fat even has a role to play in the body's function, so it can't be completely avoided for a long period of time without consequences.
A high-protein diet can still accommodate healthy carbohydrates from whole grains and fiber, vitamins and minerals, and even a few grams of fat here and there while still being considered low calorie.

Warning

Talk to your doctor before starting a new diet or nutrition plan. He can advise you about what foods will be most beneficial to help you meet your goals.
