How to Lose Seven Pounds Safely & Quickly

Finding a safe way to lose weight quickly isn't easy. According to the Mayo Clinic, losing weight at a relatively slow pace has proved safe, healthy and effective. But doctors at the Mayo Clinic and elsewhere do know of a safe and quick way to lose seven pounds. Patients facing heart or weight-loss surgery are sometimes put on strict diets to quickly lose pounds before surgery; you can use those same diets to lose seven pounds quickly and safely. These programs aren't intended for extended periods of time, but if done for one to two weeks, you will take off at least seven pounds.

Instructions

Shed Seven Pounds Fast

    1

Restrict your daily calorie intake. A restricted-calorie diet---like the one recommended for gastric bypass patients before surgery---can be followed for up to two weeks to lose 10 to 15 pounds. With this diet you could lose seven pounds in a week or less. Slash your daily calorie intake; consume only 800 to 1,200 calories a day.

    2

Drink most of your calories. A full liquid-protein diet will yield the fastest weight loss but can be very hard to stick to, even for a week. You will need to consume 70 to 120 g of protein each day; the only way to do this is with protein supplement drinks. Choose a high-quality whey, soy or hemp protein powder. You want protein powder with very little sugar (less than 5 g per serving) and high-soluble fiber (more than 10 g per serving). Don't use bodybuilder protein or weight-gaining protein; look for the words weight-loss protein or weight-control protein. According to the website bariatricchoice.com, getting adequate protein prevents the body from using lean muscle tissue as an energy source while losing body fat on a calorie-restricted diet.

    3

Mix your protein powder with water or fat-free milk. Don't use sugary juices. You should drink four to six 8 oz. protein drinks per day. Make sure to add the calories and grams of protein you're consuming with these drinks to your daily totals.

    4

Stop eating carbohydrates (rice, bread, pasta and cereals). You can eat small amounts of whole-wheat crackers, brown rice or high-fiber cereal if you're craving carbohydrates. Avoid refined sugars, saturated fats and fried food. Your diet should consist of protein drinks, fruits, vegetables, brown rice, olive oil, lean meat, nuts, beans and seeds. Make sure to count calories and keep it under 1,200 per day.

    5

Drink plenty of water. All of this extra protein yields a quick weight drop but can also cause constipation. Drinking water throughout the day will curb constipation and keep you feeling fuller. Drink at least 64 oz. of water a day.

    6

Don't overexercise while following this diet. You will lose seven pounds quickly and safely from the diet alone. You are taking in too few calories to be pushing yourself at the gym. Moderate exercise is good.
Try a 30-minute walk five days a week. Beyond that could be dangerous; don't overdo it.

Second Option

    7

Eat soup. The Sacred Heart Diet or soup diet claims weight-loss results of 10 to 17 pounds in one week, according to idiet4u.com. The diet was thought to have gotten its name from Sacred Heart Hospital in Maryland, where the plan supposedly was devised for patients who needed to lose weight fast for surgery. As it turns out, there's no connection between any major hospital and the soup diet. This diet yields quick weight loss, though. It severely limits food choices and involves eating large quantities of a homemade soup. The Sacred Heart Diet is safe to follow for one week.

    8

To make the soup, you will need these ingredients: 1 or 2 cans stewed tomatoes; 3 large green onions; 1 large can beef or vegetarian broth (no fat); 1 package chicken-noodle dry soup mix; 1 bunch celery; 2 cans green beans; 2 lbs. carrots; 2 green peppers; 1/2 head cabbage, chopped.
Use a large soup pot. Cut vegetables in small to medium pieces, and chop cabbage. Place vegetables in the pot and add just enough water to cover the vegetables. Add canned tomatoes, green beans, dry soup mix and broth; mix together. Add salt, pepper curry, parsley or Worcestershire sauce to taste. Boil fast for 10 minutes. Reduce heat and simmer until vegetables are tender.

    9

Eat as much soup as you want whenever you want all week long. The soup can be eaten at any time.

    10

Drink 64 oz. water per day. You can also drink unsweetened tea, coffee, cranberry juice and skim milk. Avoid alcohol and carbonated drinks during this week.

    11

Eat specific foods each day in combination with the soup to accelerate weight loss results.
Day 1: Eat only fruit (except bananas) and soup.
Day 2: Eat only vegetables and soup.
Day 3: Eat only fruit, vegetables and soup (no bananas, no potatoes).
Day 4: Eat only bananas and soup.
Day 5: Eat only 10 to 20 oz. beef, tomatoes and soup.
Day 6: Eat only 10 oz. beef, vegetables (no potatoes) and soup.
Day 7: Eat only brown rice, unsweetened fruit juices, vegetables and soup.
This diet works fast because it flushes your body of impurities and restricts your calorie intake. Although not for everyone, the Sacred Heart Diet, if followed, will help you safely takes off seven or more pounds in one week.

Homeopathic Remedies for AIDS

AIDS is a serious immunodeficiency virus that can have fatal consequences. It is considered to be the final phase of HIV disease. It depletes the human system with the capacity to ward off diseases caused by bacteria, viruses and fungus. Cancer and infections are more prone to occur because the body's natural immune defense system is compromised. Approximately 39.5 million people have been affected by AIDS throughout the world. Traditional medical treatment, as well as the homeopathic avenue have been utilized in its treatment.

AIDS Symptoms

AIDS causes depletion of the human immune system, making people more susceptible to infections. The symptoms include night sweats, fevers, chills, weight loss, fatigue, diarrhea and swollen lymph glands. There is no known cure for AIDS, but the typical medical treatment for the symptoms of AIDS is HAART (highly active antiretroviral therapy).

Homeopathic Remedies

Natural homeopathic remedies has been explored and utilized by sufferers of AIDS. Acupuncture has been proven helpful, as well. However, there is no natural treatment that has been proven to cure AIDS. Some may be worth trying as an alternate way to resolve some of the symptoms for the sake of comfort. It is crucial, however, that they be implemented under the direction of your doctor. A few of the herbs that are recommended are St. John's wort and aloe vera. The herbs that are known for boosting the immune system are echinacea, ginkgo and astragalus. Garlic can be beneficial in fighting viruses and bacteria. Cat's claw is an herb that dates back to the native Indians and was viewed as a sacred medicinal plant. They boiled the root and inner bark and made it into an herbal tea. Successful research by scientists has generated patents for some of the chemicals in cat's claw that are beneficial for AIDS, as well as cancer and arthritis. One of the benefits of homeopathic treatments is that they can be catered to the person's particular symptoms.

Dr. Issac Mathai is a homeopath who supports the homeopathic avenue for treating AIDS. He concludes that it stimulates the immune system to aid in fighting off disease. He supports the use of herbal supplements, along with vitamins and homeopathic medicines.

French Diet Foods

French Diet Foods

By contrast with America's reputation for obesity, French people have a reputation for being thin and glamorous. Those who have been to France and seen the liberal use of rich ingredients as well as the proclivity for drinking wine might wonder how it is possible that French people keep off the weight. Although there are certain foods that make a difference in the lack of weight gain, the underlying attitude toward food is what makes the biggest difference.

Durum Pasta

Durum pasta is pasta made from hard wheat, so it is healthier than standard white wheat pasta that most restaurants in America use. This type of pasta tastes the best when it is cooked al dente, or slightly undercooked, and can be eaten with any sauce or vegetables you like. The main secret to the French system of eating has less to do with the actual foods and more to do with an attitude toward food. Americans have created an entire fast food culture, which reflects the general approach that when you are hungry, you should eat quickly and eat a lot. The French believe that eating is an almost sacred activity and should be performed slowly and with care. Every bite should be savored and all food consumed should be treasured. This ensures that you eat less because you are more aware of when you are full--and you are more careful about what you put in your mouth. You can indulge in pasta, but be sure to savor every bite and take notice of all of the tastes within your dish.

Olive Oil

When it is necessary to add oil to your dish, avoid vegetable and canola oils and substitute olive oil in their place. Olive oil is high in fat, but it is made of healthy, unsaturated fats that will not clog your arteries or raise your cholesterol when eaten in moderation. It is the best choice for your heart and your bloodstream. Like the pasta, do not simply pour on the oil and shovel down your food. Instead, embrace every bite and be aware of the sensation of the oil on your tongue. By treating food in this precious, careful way, you will learn to appreciate your meals, and you will naturally switch to healthier, better choices.

High Cocoa Chocolate

The French do not believe in skipping dessert, so allow yourself to indulge in something with chocolate if you are looking for a sweet finish to your meal. The reason that chocolate is the best choice and, specifically, chocolate with a high cocoa content, is because it has a strong taste that cannot be overlooked. This follows the same logic as the choices above. If you really take the time to taste your food, you will appreciate it and enjoy it more, and you will not feel the need to eat as much. Rather than choosing a large portion of something tasteless, eat a few squares of good quality chocolate to satisfy your sweet tooth.

Heart Smart Diet Plans

If you want to protect yourself against heart disease, you might want to change your eating habits. The Mayo Clinic and American Heart Association insist a heart-smart diet plan does not need to include drastic changes to help your health. In fact, the heart association calls its heart healthy eating plan a "no fad" diet.

Cut Your Cholesterol and Unhealthy Fats

The Mayo Clinic says limiting the amount of saturated and trans fats in your diet is the most important step in a heart-smart diet plan because it will help you lower your blood cholesterol. High cholesterol can increase your risk of heart attack and stroke.

To cut back, the Heart Association and Mayo Clinic suggest you pick fat-free, one-percent fat and lowfat dairy products. They say you should avoid butter, lard and cream sauces.

Instead, the experts say you can use olive oil, canola oil and margarine labeled "trans fat-free" or cholesterol-lowering margarine.

Try Fish

The Heart Association says you should eat fish at least twice a week. Not only is it an alternative to higher-fat meats, but certain types of fish, such as salmon and herring, contain omega-3 fatty acids. The Mayo Clinic says omega-3 fatty acids can lower blood fats called triglycerides and may reduce your risk of sudden cardiac death.

The Mayo Clinic also says for a heart-smart diet, you should pick lean cuts of meat and skinless chicken breasts rather than fried chicken. The clinic also recommends beans, peas, lentils and soy as alternatives to high-fat meats.

Eat Your Fruits and Veggies

The American Heart Association and the Mayo Clinic recommend lots of fruits and vegetables because they are high in vitamins and fiber, and low in calories.

The clinic says you should choose recipes such as a vegetable stir-fry, in which vegetables are a big part of the meal. Another recommendation is to keep cut vegetables and a bowl of fruit handy for snacking.

Pick Whole Grains

Whole grains can also be a source of fiber, as well as of vitamins and minerals. The Mayo Clinic says you should pick bread and pasta made with 100-percent whole grains instead of refined white flour. For breakfast, pick high-fiber cereals instead of sugary cereals and donuts.

Add flaxseed to your heart-smart diet by sprinkling it on yogurt or cereal. These little brown seeds are high in fiber and omega-3 fatty acids.

Cut The Salt

The American Heart Association says you should eat less than 2,300mg of sodium a day, or about a tsp. Besides avoiding the salt shaker, the experts say you should avoid high-salt foods such as some canned soups, lunch meats, hot dogs and frozen dinners.

Cut The Sugar

The Heart Association says you should also cut back on foods and beverages with added sugar. The calories for sugary drinks can really add up, and you need to avoid the sweeteners they contain, such as sucrose, glucose, fructose, maltose, dextrose and high-fructose corn syrup.

The Mayo Clinic advises that, if you are going to buy frozen fruit, make sure it does not have a lot of added sugar; and buy fruit that is canned in juice or water rather than heavy syrup.

Overall

Both groups say portion control is an important part of a heart-smart diet plan, because controlling portions will help you stay at a healthy weight. You can have occasional indulgences but do not make them a habit.

How to Prevent Sun Stroke

Sun stroke, also called heat stroke, is a potentially life-threatening condition that occurs when the body fails to regulate its internal temperature usually because of overexposure to the sun. Being outdoors, in direct sunlight, for extended periods of time during hot, humid weather affects the body's ability to naturally cool itself through sweating. Under such conditions, a heat stroke may occur and the body's temperature might rise up to 106 degrees in 10 or 15 minutes. Prevent sun stroke by staying hydrated and making smart decisions about how to spend your day outdoors.

Instructions

    1

Dress appropriately on hot, humid days. Make sure to wear light-colored clothing that reflects the sun and bring along a hat, sunglasses or umbrella to shade yourself from its harmful rays. Clothing should be loose on your body and made of a tightly-woven fabric.

    2

Plan exercise or other outdoor activities for early in the morning or late in the day, not for midday when the sun is the strongest.

    3

Take frequent breaks in the shade to allow your body to cool itself naturally.

    4

Keep yourself hydrated by drinking water or sports drinks. Avoid caffeinated beverages and alcohol, which are diuretics and cause the body to lose water.

    5

Recognize the warning signs of sun stroke. If you feel very hot but not sweating, have a headache and experience dizziness, nausea, a rapid pulse, or confusion, you may be experiencing heat stroke.

    6

React to the symptoms of heat stroke by going indoors, applying ice packs or cool water to the body, and lying down in a cool area until your body returns to its normal temperature.

Ayahuasca Plant Potency & Blood Pressure

Ayahuasca Plant Potency & Blood Pressure

Stories of the power of the South American plant ayahuasca have spawned an influx of New Age tourists. They congregate in the Amazon jungles of Colombia, Peru and Brazil to drink the muddy brown concoction, vomit copiously, and hopefully have life-altering visions. Ayahuasca, which means "vine of the soul" in Quechuan, contains the hallucinogen DMT---or dimethyltrytamine

DMT is illegal in the United States.

How it Works

Ayahuasca is usually taken ceremonially in a ritual led by a trained shaman, called a curandero. He mixes a carefully chemically balanced concoction of plants and vines. Ordinarily, the enzyme monoamine oxydase---or MAO---in stomach acid would metabolize DMT so that it would not be effective when taken orally. But ayahuasca inhibits MAO, allowing DMT to cause hallucinations. The word ayahuasca refers to a combination of plants that includes DMT and a MAO inhibitor.

Purposes

Curanderos do not share the casual attitude of many Western drug users. To them, ayahuasca is a sacred substance used strictly for healing. They use it to treat physical problems such as snake bites and mental problem such as depression. They believe the plant has magical powers that allow them to see the future, attain magical powers and converse with spirits.

At the very least, drinking ayahuasca leads to intense physical purging.

Blood Pressure and Potency

Blood pressure measures how much force is exerted by the blood on the blood vessels. Too much and you're in trouble. Ayahuasca combines with many commonly taken drugs to increase serotonin and push the blood pressure dangerously high. These include Zoloft, Wellbrutin and Prozac. People who have taken any of these medications within the last six weeks should not take ayahuasca. Those who have high blood pressure also should not use ayahuasca. The higher the potency and/or larger the dose of ayahuasca, the more dangerous it will be.

MAO Inhibitors and Diet

MAO inhibitors can be very dangerous because they can make everyday foods and commonly used drugs harmful, or even fatal. Some of the more dangerous things to combine with MAO inhibitors include alcohol, cough medicine, antidepressants and sleeping pills. Such innocuous foods as dairy products, soy sauce, sauerkraut and many fruits can also be rendered poisonous. Any of these can raise the blood pressure significantly. A throbbing headache is an early sign of dangerously high blood pressure. Shamans recommend fasting or at least following a very careful diet in the days leading up to the ayahuasca ceremony.

Play it Safe

Several outfitters offer guided ayahuasca trips to foreigners interested in having a safe shamanistic experience in the Amazon. Some of them even insist on administering a medical check to visitors before allowing them to participate. These organizations are likely to enforce a strict diet and provide some kind of medical monitoring.

Heart Healthy Diet Plans

According to the American Heart Association, more than 80 million people in the United States have a type of cardiovascular disease. High blood pressure is the largest type of this disease. To ensure proper heart and blood vessel function, it is essential to eat heart healthy foods. Fortunately, there are plenty of foods and recipes that will benefit your heart. Avoid being a statistic and eat for your heart.

Fats

Contrary to popular belief, there are fats that benefit your body. Fats are broken into four types: saturated, polyunsaturated, monounsaturated and trans fats. The best fats for you are polyunsaturated and monounsaturated. Polyunsaturated fats are found in soybean, sunflower and corn oils. Monounsaturated fats are in plant-based oils like canola, peanut and olive oils. Both of these fats lower cholesterol, but should still be eaten in moderation. Saturated and trans fats are the biggest culprits in high cholesterol. The best rule of thumb is that if a fat is solid at room temperature, it is probably one of these fats. Baked goods, beef, cheese and lard are full of saturated fats. Trans fats have directly contributed to the skyrocketing rate of diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Trans fats were invented only as a cheap ingredient for companies to use in food to ensure a longer shelf life. Avoid trans fats and only eat saturated fats occasionally.

Planning Your Diet

The best plan of action is to make a list of foods you enjoy that fall under the guidelines of heart healthy foods. Vegetables, fruits, lean meats, fish, low-fat dairy products, soy, fiber and whole grains should make up the majority of your meals. There are some specific foods that lower bad cholesterol levels such as legumes. Beans straddle both the vegetable and protein tiers in the food pyramid. They are a wonderful source of fiber and packed with nutrients. Omega-3 fatty acids have proven extremely beneficial when it comes to lowering cholesterol. Eat plenty of cold water fish like salmon and tuna. Dark leafy greens help lower the levels of a blood enzyme associated with heart disease. Fill your diet with spinach, swiss chard, collard greens and arugula. Soy is a wonderful source of protein and contain phytoestrogens, which are great for your heart. Try out different products like soy cheese, soy milk and tempeh.

Meals

It is vitally important to read food ingredient labels when food shopping for your heart. There are a breadth of tricky chemicals and ingredients that end up in products. Stick to fresh vegetables and fruits. Avoid any processed foods, refined flour and sugar products. Create a meal plan for the week and only buy foods on the meal plan. To save time in the morning, make quick recipes like yogurt parfaits, egg sandwiches and peanut butter on whole wheat toast. Pack your lunch for work to avoid fast-food temptations. Include wonderful salads, wrap, and burritos with black beans. Use dinners to explore and experiment with delicious heart healthy recipes.

Mayo Clinic Soup Diet

Mayo Clinic Soup Diet

The Mayo Clinic Soup Diet is not actually endorsed by the Mayo Clinic medical organization. Rather, its a fad diet that has been circulating for decades, also referred to as the Cabbage Soup Diet or the Model's Diet. The centerpiece of this diet is a cabbage soup that is consumed each day in conjunction with other foods. The dieter can expect to lose up to ten pounds in one week. This diet should not be maintained for longer than seven days.

Recipe

The ingredients needed to prepare the soup are six green onions, two green peppers, two cans of diced tomatoes, one bunch of celery, one envelope dry onion soup mix, one bouillon cube, one large head of cabbage, and one can of V-8 juice, though it is optional.

Cut the vegetables into small pieces and place in a large pot. Cover with water and V-8 juice if desired. Bring the mixture to a boil and then reduce to simmer for 30 minutes.

Day One

Eat all the fruit you desire except for bananas. Eat as much of the soup as you would like in addition to the fruits. Consume unsweetened teas, cranberry juice or water.

Day Two

Eat an abundance of fresh, raw or cooked vegetables. Avoid dry beans, peas and corn. Eat as much of the soup as you would like in addition to the vegetables. At dinner you may have a baked potato with a small amount of butter.

Day Three

Eat all the fruits, vegetables, and soup you want. Do not have a baked potato on day three.

Day Four

Eat up to eight bananas and consume as much skim milk as you want in addition to consuming your soup.

Day Five

Consume 10 to 20 ounces of beef and a maximum of six fresh tomatoes. Be sure to eat your soup at least once during day five. Drink six to eight ounces of water to flush uric acid from the body.

Day Six

Consume an unlimited amount of beef and vegetables during day six. Eat your soup at least once, but do not consume a baked potato.

Day Seven

Eat as much brown rice, unsweetened fruit juices, and vegetables as you'd like. Eat your soup at least once during day seven.

Birmingham Heart Diet

The Birmingham Heart Diet, also known as the "Birmingham Heart Hospital Diet," the "3-Day Diet" and the "Cardiac Unit of UAB Hospital Diet," has been circulating for years. Reputed to be a program given to patients with cardiac disease so that they may lose weight quickly, the diet is in fact not actually promoted by any hospitals. Nevertheless, UAB Hospital reports getting many requests for the diet every year. The diet promises quick, effective weight loss, but medical professionals have called it "potentially harmful," and asserted that there is no scientific basis for its claims.

The Plan

The Birmingham Diet follows a 3-day-on, 4-day-off program, during which you eat strictly according to the plan for three days and then eat whatever you like for four days, repeating the cycle until you have reached your weight loss goal. According to the rules of the diet, however, during the three days you must follow the plan to the letter. There are no substitutions allowed. You cannot change the amount of food specified. This, according to the diet's proponents, is because the foods contained in the plan work together to chemically break down fat, and changing these foods or the amounts will harm the process.

During the diet, in addition to the tea and/or coffee included in the menus, you can drink water and diet, no-calorie soda. The only seasonings allowed are salt and pepper. There is a restrictive menu for each day which you must follow. On the first day, breakfast is 1/2 grapefruit, 1 slice of toast, 1 tbsp peanut butter and black coffee or unsweetened tea. Lunch is 1/2 cup of tuna, 1 slice of toast, and black coffee or tea. Dinner is 2 slices or 3 oz. of any meat, 1 cup of string beans, 1 cup of carrots or beets, 1 apple, and 1 cup of vanilla ice cream.

Day 2 begins with a breakfast of 1 hard-boiled egg, 1 slice of toast, 1/2 banana, and coffee or tea. Lunch is 1 cup of cottage cheese or 1 cup of tuna and 5 saltine crackers. Dinner is 2 hot dogs, 1 cup cabbage or broccoli, 1/2 cup turnip greens or carrots, 1/2 banana, and 1 cup of vanilla ice cream.

On the last day, you have the same breakfast as Day 2, minus the banana. Lunch is 1 slice of cheddar cheese, 5 saltine crackers, 1 apple and coffee or tea. Dinner is 1 cup tuna, 1 cup carrots or beets, one cup green beans or cauliflower, 1 cup cantaloupe or 1 apple, and 1 cup vanilla ice cream. On the fourth day, return to regular eating, as long as you do not overeat.

Warning

Do not begin any weight loss program without consulting with your doctor or a qualified medical professional. Don't stay on the Birmingham Diet longer than three days at a time if you do choose to try it. It's meant for short-term weight loss--not meant to be a long-term eating plan. The meals put daily caloric intake at about 1,000 calories per day, which is quite low. There are many negative results from following a very calorie-restricted diet for too long, such as fatigue, depression, hair loss and frequent bruising.

How to Install Sacred 2

"Sacred 2: Fallen Angel" is a PC video game developed by Ascaron Entertainment and published by cdv Software Entertainment. It is a single-player action role-playing game that was released in North America in November 2008 and has also been ported to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 consoles. Installing the game is straightforward enough -- simply insert the disc, follow the on-screen commands and enter the product serial key.

Instructions

    1

Insert the game disc into your computer's disc drive. Hold the CD carefully so as to not damage or scratch the disc's surface; doing so may harm the gameplay speed, run quality or -- in serious cases -- prevent the game from working at all.

    2

Wait for your PC to recognize the new disc. "Sacred 2" comes with an automatic setup application pre-installed with the game; this means that a window will appear offering you the option to install the game. Click the "Install" button to continue.

    3

Follow the on-screen instructions by clicking the "Next" button after each step. The steps are very straightforward; choose a program destination folder and agree with the software user license agreement.

    4

Enter your product serial key on one of the steps when prompted. The game serial number should be a 16-digit code in a XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX format and is located on the back of the game manual. Confirm the number and allow the PC to automatically begin your installation.

    5

Insert the extra two discs when prompted by the installation program. Do this by ejecting the current CD and simply inserting the next one. Your computer will recognize the disc and continue the installation.

How to Diet the Easy Way

How to Diet the Easy Way

A lot of people may view dieting as a daunting task they must endure to lose weight and get healthy. However, with a few simple steps, dieting can be an easy task to face. If you want to diet, without the complication of calorie counting, giving up indulgences and following fads, learn easy steps you can take to doing so.

Instructions

    1

Stick to water for your beverage of choice. Eliminating carbonated sodas and concentrated fruit juices can cut a lot of calories from your diet. The recommended daily intake is about eight glasses a day, so make sure you get at least that. For a little flavor you can add lime or lemon slices to your water.

    2

Eat small meals and snacks throughout the day, having your biggest meal at dinner. Skipping meals is a not good way to lose weight, because you need to keep your metabolism and blood sugar up throughout the day, otherwise you end up crashing or feeling weak, which can lead to binging. Stick to a light protein-filled breakfast and lunch, with a small snack in between each meal. Think of it as eating a light meal or snack every three to four hours until dinnertime.

    3

Increase the amount of fruits and vegetables you eat during the day. Insure you get eight servings of fruit and vegetables daily, giving you tons of vitamins and antioxidants for your health. Fruits and vegetables will also make you feel fuller faster, which can leave you feeling satisfied without overeating. Try having a serving with each meal, and adding two or three more servings for snacks throughout the day.

    4

Keep portion size in mind. People will often eat more than they need. Since the stomach isn't a very big organ, feeling full doesn't take a lot of food. When portioning out meals keep portions of main foods like pasta, chicken, beef and fish to about the size of your fist, this is a good way to measure a serving. Then do slightly smaller-sized portions for sides, like seasoned veggies and fruits.

    5

Remove junk food from your home. Taking away the temptation of eating processed, high-fat foods can make dieting all the more easy. Go through your kitchen and take out any processed foods, like greasy potato chips, cheesy crackers, fatty mayonnaise or fried foods. Replace these foods with healthy alternatives, for example instead of potato chips with your sandwich, try sliced fruit. Or instead of chips and dip, try baby carrots and hummus for a healthy snack.

    6

Prepare healthy snacks to have readily available. Slice up veggies or fruits and put them in a plastic container to have whenever you feel a little hunger pang between meals, or put in a plastic bag for travel. Almonds are another easy snack. Another thing to try is hard boiled eggs, which are also great if you need a protein-packed healthy breakfast on the go.

    7

Allow for small indulgences. Dieting doesn't mean you can't enjoy some guilty pleasure foods, like cake, ice cream or french fries. If you want to indulge just limit the portion. Have a small slice of cake, instead of multiple slices, or a small fry instead of super-sized. Allow yourself an indulgence two to three times a week at most, you don't want to sabotage your diet by indulging daily or too often.

    8

Cut out alcoholic beverages. Beers and sugary mixed drinks have a lot of sugar, carbohydrates and calories, so keep that in mind next time you want that after-work drink to relax. If you do want to indulge, stick to light beer or clear mixed drinks like vodka tonics, or gin and tonics.

    9

Don't snack late at night. Often when you snack at night it's out of habit, but late-night snacks can add many calories to an otherwise healthy diet. If you must snack, or want to munch on something for movie night, stick to low-calorie snacks, like light popcorn or rice cakes. Sometimes even a hot cup of sugar-free tea can make you feel full, without adding an calories to your day.

How to Make Chicha de Jora

Chicha de Jora is a traditional alcoholic beverage of the Andean region of South America. Made from fermented jora, a type of dried corn, this sweet beverage is a sacred drink shared amongst communities during festivals and special gatherings. Most families do not follow a strict Chicha recipe, but adjust it to their personal taste. Use this recipe creatively and create your own unique flavor of Chicha de Jora. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Instructions

    1

Lightly toast 1/2 lb. of jora and 1/2 lb. of barley. Traditionally, this is done on a ceramic plate over a wood fire; however, you can toast the jora and barley on a cookie sheet in your oven. Set the oven and 350 degrees and place the cookie sheet with jora and barley inside. Stir the grains every few minutes until evenly toasted.

    2

Add the toasted grains and 10 gallons of water to a large cooking pot and heat to a boil. Allow the mixture to boil for 2 1/2 hours, stirring often to prevent burning. Allow the mixture to cool until lukewarm.

    3

Strain the grains from the water using a piece of cheesecloth. Add brown sugar to taste, stirring the mixture with a wooden spoon. Pour the Chicha into an earthenware pitcher and cover the pitcher with a clean piece of cheesecloth. Allow the it to ferment for at least 24 hours or up to 3cdays, and serve at room temperature.

Bentonite Clay Drug Detox Rehab for the Colon

Bentonite clay is a gray healing clay mined around Benton, Wyoming. Clay has been used since ancient times for healing purposes, in Europe and by Native Americans. Clay is able to absorb things into it. It's also adsorbent, which means things can stick to it and stay there.

Benefits

Because of its adsorbent properties, Bentonite clay can provide a good means of drawing toxins from the body through the skin and the digestive tract. Toxins, such as drugs you have taken or food additives and impacted fecal matter, are absorbed into or adsorbed onto the clay as it passes through your intestines and colon. You can then rid yourself of them through elimination. The clay also has essential minerals that your body can pick up during this process.

How to Use It

Bentonite clay is sold as a powder that you can mix with filtered water and drink on a daily or periodic basis. There is also benefit in mixing the clay as a poultice, or even in a bath, to soak in or apply to your skin. One of the ways your body naturally rids itself of toxins is through the pores. Clay can help speed the process.

Evidence That Clay is Effective

A 1961 study by Howard Lind of Lind Laboratories in Brookline, Massachusetts, showed Bentonite clay has the ability to kill bacteria such as staphylococcus and E. coli. Some former drug-addicted people and alcoholics say that after taking a similar clay, called Pascalite, they begin losing their desire for the drug.

Considerations

Be sure to take the clay separately from any other medications or supplements you may be taking. Because Bentonite clay is so absorbent, it can interfere with the effectiveness of them. Some people experience diarrhea when taking clay, especially at first, so drink plenty of water. Clay therapy is considered safe.

Availability

You can find many different clay products online (see Resources) and at a health food store. Bentonite clay, sacred clay (Ee Wah Kee) and French green clay are specifically mined and processed for their health benefits. Although you may find clay in a local river bed, don't assume it has the same therapeutic effects.

Types of Cardiac Diets

There are many different types of diets that can improve cardiac health. These diets are designed with low-fat options that are beneficial for a healthy heart. A diet with good fats such as olive oil as a main staple is also good for the heart. Maintaining cardiac health can add years and longevity to our lives. Additional supplements that can improve heart health are B-vitamins and cod liver oil.

South Beach Diet

The South Beach Diet is a cardiac diet that was created by heart doctor Arthur Agatston . The South Beach Diet has three phases. The first is strict and involves eating only low-fat foods in small portions and no carbohydrates.

The second phase of the diet involves adding good carbohydrates such as carrots back into the diet. Once a person has achieved her desired results, the next step is to maintain the weight by entering Phase 3 of the diet, which is based on making healthy lifestyle choices.

The amount of time a person spends in each phase depends on the amount of weight that needs to be lost. Most people need to spend about two to three weeks on Phase 1 and then two months on Phase 2.

Vegetarian Diet

Vegetarian diets are good cardiac diets. A healthy vegetarian diet is a lifestyle choice that is good for cardiac health because of the absence of meat. The fat in meat contributes to heart disease. A good vegetarian diet involves eating three to five servings of fruits and vegetables per day. It is also important to consume healthy sources of protein such as beans, lentils or spirulina.

The Zone Diet

The Zone Diet is also great for cardiac health. It has been recognized because many celebrities, such as Jennifer Aniston, claim that they have followed it to maintain their weight. The Zone Diet focuses on eating whole foods and the right kinds of healthy carbohydrates. The only meat allowed is lean low-fat options such as turkey and fish.

Detox Diet

The detox diet is meant to improve cardiac health and reduce the toxin burden put on the body from our environment. A book by Elson Haas details how to make the detox diet work for you and if full of delicious vegetable dishes. The diet involves colon cleansing with juices and choosing foods that detoxify the body such as dark green leafy vegetables and carrots. Reducing the toxic burden on the body can improve overall heath and heart function.

Low Fat/Sodium Diet

Another type of cardiac diet is a low-fat low sodium diet. Too much fat and salt in our diet is bad for the heart. A low-sodium, low-fat diet involves eating less than 1,800 calories per day of foods that don't contain high levels of sodium or fat. You want to avoid foods such as fried and processed foods. You also want to avoid canned soups because they contain high levels of sodium.

Cardiac Diabetic Diet

Patients with diabetes often have other conditions such as obesity, high blood pressure and high cholesterol that put them at greater risk for heart attack and stroke. Being diabetic makes eating a healthy diet for your heart and for effective blood glucose control an important part of your overall treatment. Maintain a healthy weight, eat less saturated fat and keep your blood sugar under control for cardiac health.

Fats

If you are a diabetic cardiac patient, eat a diet low in saturated fats such as butter and lard. Eat lean meats such as chicken, turkey, trimmed pork and sirloin. Eat smaller portions of meat and load your plate with vegetables and complex carbohydrates such as brown rice. Choose low-fat or non-fat dairy products like skim milk and low-fat yogurt and cottage cheese.

Check labels when you buy food for nutrition information. Trans fats raise blood cholesterol levels, putting you at higher risk for blocked arteries, heart attack and stroke. Avoid foods that have trans fats or hydrogenated oils listed. Skip the french fries and other fried foods. Look for margarine and spreads that do not contain trans fats.

Sodium

Limit sodium to decrease hypertension (high blood pressure). Season your food with herbs and spices in the kitchen instead of salt. Do not salt your food at the table. Cook fresh and frozen vegetables instead of canned, and avoid canned soups and processed entrees. Instead, cook your own soups using fresh vegetables and lean meat. Refrigerate leftovers and heat them up in the microwave for a quick and easy lunch. Check labels to avoid hidden sodium.

Carbohydrates

Diabetics should limit carbohydrates to avoid spikes in blood glucose levels, but fiber and nutrition from whole-grain carbohydrates and fruits and vegetables comprise a necessary part of a heart-healthy diet. Eat non-starchy vegetables such as spinach, green beans, asparagus and cabbage for most of your meals. Instead of white rice and pasta, eat the whole-grain varieties that are much higher in fiber. Avoid sugary foods and sweets and get your allowed carbohydrates instead from fruit, vegetable, and whole-grain carbohydrate sources.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Omega-3 fatty acids in the diet help lower cholesterol. Eat foods high in omega-3 fatty acids such as fresh fish prepared on a grill, steamed, or broiled. Soy products and walnuts offer plant sources of omega-3 fatty acids. Try sprinkling foods such as pasta dishes or hot cereal with flax seed or incorporate flaxseed oil into your cooking.

How to Use Birch for Health

How to Use Birch for Health

Birch trees, with their delicate silver bark, are among the first to bloom in spring. Their early appearance is associated with life, renewal and fertility. As a result, birch bark and birch leaves have a rich history as ingredients in folk remedies. Follow a few simple steps to use birch for a variety of health conditions.

Instructions

    1

Treat diarrhea. Brew birch bark tea. Use a teaspoon of ground birch bark and 8 ounces of boiling water. Allow the bark to steep for 15 minutes. Drink 3 cups spaced 4 hours apart to eliminate this health problem.

    2

Address skin conditions. Make a birch bark paste. Use sufficient water to cover the bark. Boil until soft and then mash with a kitchen hammer or pestle. Apply the paste to sores, abrasions and inflammations. Repeat daily and watch for improved skin health within a week.

    3

Soothe sore muscles. Rub them with birch oil, also called birch tar. Massage with the oil after exercise to reduce pain and stiffness.

    4

Repel insects. They carry diseases that can compromise health. Use birch bark extract. It has a high concentration of acid that wards off mosquitoes, gnats and other bugs. Combine 25 drops with 4 ounces of water. Use a spray pump bottle to distribute the mixture evenly over exposed skin.

    5

Accelerate hair growth. Brew a tea using two handfuls of birch leaves. After shampooing, use the tea as a final rinse. Massage the scalp.

    6

Increase urination. This is important for the overall health of the urinary tract and prevention of kidney and bladder stones. Brew a birch leaf tea or take a tincture made from 2.5 grams of dry birch leaves. Drink one cup of tea or 25 drops of tincture, 3 times a day.

Siamese Cat Problems

The Siamese cat is an unusual breed, renowned for its beauty. Sleek and muscular, Siamese are classified according to color points. The coloration of their face, ears, tail and paws can be seal (brown) or blue (gray). Known for their intense blue eyes, Siamese are one of the oldest breeds of cats. Typically, they are long-lived cats, often living well past 15 years. They tend to be calm cats and make excellent pets, but they require companionship and attention if they are to behave at their best.

Spraying

Many breeds of male cats spray. This is a way of marking territory. If your Siamese cat is spraying, have him neutered right away unless you plan to breed him. The procedure is simple and beneficial to the overall health of the cat. Often, owners misinterpret this behavior, thinking their very social and affectionate Siamese is "angry" at being left alone or "jealous" of a new pet.

Destruction

Siamese cats are very sociable. When left alone for long periods of time, they can become destructive. They may wander in search of companionship, subjecting themselves to traffic and predator risk. If you work long hours or travel a great deal, consider a second cat. Often, this is enough to alleviate the loneliness and attendant bad habits.

Loud Meowing

A Siamese cat in full voice is very loud. Siamese cats tend to be very vocal, and their voices can be remarkably loud. The cat sounds very much like a baby crying. Under certain conditions, your neighbors may hear these cries and become concerned. Alert your nearest neighbors of your cat's propensity for vocalization.

Upper Respiratory Problems

Siamese cats became popular in the 1970s and 1980s. Like many popular breeds, certain genetic problems crop up, particularly if they are not bred responsibly. Upper respiratory infections may plague some Siamese. Provide a dry, warm sleeping environment that is free from drafts and dampness. When visiting a breeder of purebred Siamese cats, ask about inherited genetic respiratory conditions. Look closely around the cattery; all residents should have bright eyes and show no signs of coughing or wheezing.

Kinked Tails

A kinked tail disqualifies a Siamese from the show circuit, but this condition is not painful or dangerous. Many years ago, the kinked tail was considered a desirable trait in the breed, but it is now considered a fault. Often, the kink is not visible and can only be spotted by running the hands along the tail.

Crossed Eyes

Occasionally, a kitten will be born with crossed eyes. Again, this is a fault when it comes to showing a cat, but the problem does not seem to cause any distress to the cat. Due to the narrow, wedge shape of a Siamese cat's head, many cats appear to be cross-eyed but are not truly so. The condition does not affect the cat's behavior or health.

Other Abnormalities

Certain genetic abnormalities appear in purebred Siamese cats. These include umbilical hernias, heart murmurs and kidney disease. These conditions are not unique to Siamese cats and can be managed with proper care. A regular program of veterinary exams, a sensible diet and moderate exercise will keep your noisy friend healthy and happy for years to come.

How to Alleviate and Avoid Constipation

Constipation is a prevalent medical condition that affects over 25 percent of the population in the United States and accounts for nearly 2 million doctor visits annually in this country. The western diets consisting of high fatty foods, fast foods, sodas, caffeine products, low fibre in-take, etc, and compounded with our unhealthy living and stressful lifestyles are significant contributing factors in causing such high numbers of cases complaining of this medical condition. Statistics and data have shown that females are affected more than men and the older geriatric age group are a higher risk of getting constipation then the younger age group.
A large majority of the population in this country have poor or substandard colon health awareness or lack the knowledge about how important it is to maintain a healthy colon to prevent other illnesses and medical complications, increase vitality and energy, and allow the reabsorption and detoxification processes of the colon to function at its optimum level over one's lifetime.
The anatomy and physiology of the colon is important to understand so it will help you avoid or reduce the frequency of constipation. The role of the colon is reabsorption of fluid, water , nutrients and minerals from the digested food and substances back into the body before it is eliminated and expelled form the body as fecal matter. That is why a healthy and clean colon is so important to a healthy body, mind and spirit and to avoid getting constipation.
This article will help you find ways to reduce and alleviate symptoms of constipation.

Instructions

    1

DIET, FLUID AND FIBER INTAKE. One way to help address your constipation and reduce the frequency of occurrence is to take a good look at your diet and make appropriate changes. Is there enough fiber intake?...or do you drink enough fluids (water) each day to maintain soft, consistency in stool formation when it passes through the colon. It is recommended for adults to drink at least 6-8 glasses of water daily and to include at least 25 - 30 grams of fiber in the diet by the American Dietetic Association.

    2

COLON CLEANSING. Another way to reduce and alleviate symptoms of constipation is to maintain a healthy colon by becoming educated and informed to the various options available to clean and detoxify the body and the colon from toxins and waste by-products from the foods and potential carcinogens (cancer-causing substances) that we ingest in the body. A regular colon cleanse will help to flush out all the toxins that have accumulated in the colon and will reduce the risk of getting constipation. It will help to flush out trapped fecal waste, remove harmful bacteria and organisms in the bowel, and help to encourage growth of intestinal flora that is essential to keep a healthy colon.

There are several methods to cleanse the colon:
Fasting (total, water, fruit fasting), Chemical Colon Cleansing, Herbal Colon Cleansing, Enemas, Colonic Irrigation, Laxatives.

Read my article entitled "HOW TO UNDERSTAND DIFFERENT TYPES OF COLON CLEANSING METHODS TO PREVENT CONSTIPATION"

    3

The ANATOMY of the colon is important to understand if we want to maintain a healthy colon and reduce the risk of getting constipation. The colon is basically a long tube approximately 5 ft to 6 ft in length and made up of muscles that contracts involuntary in a "wave-like" fashion called PERISTALSIS movement in order to move the digested food along it passageway. Like regular exercising needed to maintain good health, for example, cardiovascular exercises to keep a healthy heart muscle pumping, then regular exercises, like walking, jogging, yoga, swimming, etc, will help to keep the colon musculature functioning at its optimum and will help to prevent constipation by moving the food faster through the bowel.

    4

HERBAL REMEDIES. Herbs can also be helpful in reducing the symptoms of constipation. For example, cascara sagrada (also called Rhamnus Purshiana Bark or Sacred Bar)is a natural laxative and is very effective but used improperly it can agitate the GI tract and cause vomiting, bloody diarrhea, bloating and abdominal cramps. Another important fact to know about this herb is that it should NOT be taken for more than seven consecutive days because excessive use can cause the colon to be dependent on it.
Another powerful plant is Senna and is used as a natural relief for constipation symptoms. The plant contains a chemical compound called anthraquinones, which possesses a powerful laxative effect. But be cautious when taking this laxative. Do not take more than seven days as it can cause permanent and long term damage and complications to the colon.

    5

MEDICATION. Certain medications have effects on the colon causing or exacerbating constipation. Be careful when you take medications and inform your doctor that you suffer from constipation or have a history of this medical condition. Some antidepressants, sedatives, anti-parkinson drugs are common medications that can cause constipation. Also supplements and over-the-counter drugs, like, antacids (containing calcium or aluminium) and antihistamines can have the same effects.

    6

PSYLLIUM AND FLAXSEED. Adding certain amount of Psyllium and flaxseed into the diet regularly will help to reduce and relieve the symptoms of constipation. Psyllium works by absorbing water and swelling inside the colon producing a substance called mucilage which attaches itself to the impacted fecal matter in the colon. Remember to drink plenty of water to prevent constipation while taking Psyllium or products containing psyllium.

How to Lose Weight With Juicing

How to Lose Weight With Juicing

The new trend known as "juicing" has its roots in basic nutritional fact. The fundamental idea is that fruits and vegetables have the vitamins and elements we need to stay healthy. So it makes a lot of sense to replace pizzas, French fries and chicken salad sandwiches with juice combinations, whether you're trying to lose pounds or just feel better. The antioxidants in lots of juice combinations are a boost for your body's immune system and general health. Here are some ways to pursue juicing to the best of your ability.

Instructions

    1

Find juice combinations you like. Don't make yourself suffer while downing heavy vegetable combinations. Gradually explore which fruits and vegetable are better suited to your palate. Try carrot, orange and banana together. Tomato can go with most other vegetables such as spinach and kale. Blueberry and pomegranate juices can be combined with just about any other fruit or vegetable juice and taste great.

    2

Replace high-calorie fruits with vegetable juices. The difference can be vast (check out the caloric value of a carrot compared to a banana). Vegetables can add bulk to your juice without adding a boatload of calories.

    3

Get organic juices by using organic products to avoid pesticides and other chemicals in your juices. You want to keep the pulp and nutrients in and the excess waxes or coatings of your fruits out for a healthier result.

    4

Use spices to stimulate the metabolism. Things like cayenne pepper, allspice or cardamom might seem out of place at first, but some of these ingredients can actually give your metabolism a boost. Considering grinding them into your juice until you acquire the new taste.

    5

Utilize fat burners and thyroid helpers. Other ingredients can contribute to weight loss by supplying enzymes, specific metabolic elements or even just a good dose of fiber. Make up your recipe with these elements in mind.

Carrots for Weight Loss

Carrots are one of nature's most nutrient-rich foods. Carrots are also incredibly low in calories and are a proven way to lose weight quickly. But you can't use them efficiently without understanding why carrots help you lose weight.

Why Do Carrots Help Me Lose Weight?

Carrots are incredibly high in fiber. Fiber is one of the most important substances in losing weight. Fiber cannot be digested by the body; it simply passes through the body, with other food attached. This, however, doesn't stop your digestive system from trying to digest it. It sends out more digestive enzymes to try and break down the fiber. This causes the digestive system to more fully digest the food in your stomach. This helps use all of the foods energy and helps speed your metabolism.

Carrots are also incredibly low in fat and calories. They are so low, in fact, that carrots can be considered a thermogenic food, which is a food that takes more calories to digest it than is actually in the food. This means that you burn calories by simply eating carrots. Carrots are also incredibly high in nutrients such as beta carotene, vitamin A and potassium. These nutrients help your body function more smoothly, and a body that is functioning properly is a body that burns more calories.

How Can I Use Carrots to Lose Weight?

Losing weight with carrots is simple; integrate more carrots into your diet. Some people go on crash diets in which they eat carrots and little else. Don't do this. Crash diets are an unhealthy way to lose weight. Though you will lose weight on a crash diet, you will also suffer from malnutrition. Most diets focus on a single food and eliminate a lot of other foods. While carrots are extremely healthy, they don't possess all of the nutrients you need in a day. They can be a powerful tool in losing weight. Integrate carrots into lunch and supper. Sprinkle carrot sticks on your salad. Have carrot sticks as a healthy snack. Boil carrots, along with other vegetables, for a healthy side dish. A great fat-free soup can be made with carrots, onions, fat-free soy or chicken and white pepper.

Arabic & Islamic Gifts

Arabic & Islamic Gifts

To Muslims, generosity ("sakhawat" in Arabic) is both a cardinal virtue and a religious obligation. In that spirit, feast days and celebrations are invariably occasions of lavish hospitality and guests customarily bring gifts. No Muslim would fault a non-Muslim for any well-intended gift: the Prophet, after all, taught that actions are judged according to intentions. Nonetheless, people of other faiths who present Muslim friends with gifts that reveal sensitivity to Islamic culture are also conveying a message of respect certain to be received with special appreciation.

What Not to Give

Poetry and books showcasing Islamic art, architecture and culture make welcome gifts.
Poetry and books showcasing Islamic art, architecture and culture make welcome gifts.

Religiously observant Muslims don't drink alcohol, so gifts of liquor are inappropriate, as are perfumes, colognes and aftershaves containing alcohol. Pork and anything made of pigskin are "haraam" (forbidden). The dog is controversial in Islam, so dog images should be avoided as well. Clothing may be given by an adult to a child but beyond that, personal gifts are unwise unless the giver and recipient are close friends of the same sex.

Flowers

Islam was born in the arid deserts of Saudi Arabia, so it's not surprising that in the Koran, Paradise is a garden. Floral arrangements are always appropriate gifts, and while all flowers symbolize the creative power of God, the rose has special status as the "Queen of Flowers." Its heart signifies the teachings of the Prophet guiding the hearts of Muslims, its thorns the difficulties Muslims must overcome on the path to God and its scent the fragrance of heaven. Tulips, carnations, jasmine, lilies and irises are also revered in Islamic horticulture and are common as artistic motifs.

As for colors, let beauty and harmony be your guide when choosing a floral gift, but include plenty of green, the signature color of Islam, and yellow, which stands for friendship and joy. White is fine as an accent but should never dominate, since it is also associated with death.

Poetry and Coffee Table Books

All cultures throughout the Islamic world have their own eminent poets, often as much household names as Shakespeare, yet they are little-known in the West. Many editions published today are bilingual, containing poetry both in the original language and English translation. Major languages include (but are not limited to) Arabic, Persian, Turkish and Urdu.

To discover which bards are most revered by your friends' culture and the books available, you can go to a book seller's database, either within a physical store or online, and do a keyword search on language and/or nationality, "books" and "poetry." Coffee table books on Islamic architecture, art and culture also make thoughtful gifts.

Fabric Arts, Metalwork and Ceramics

Carpets hand-loomed in the Muslim world have been prized in the West for centuries, but traditional fabric arts also include other kinds of weaving as well as intricate needlework. Calligraphy, the creation of sacred art from Arabic letters, words and verses ("suras") from the Koran appears in Islamic art and crafts made from all materials. Decorative ceramics, including tile work, tea sets, coffee urns and serving platters, are both used and displayed in Muslim homes. The art of engraving on copper, brass and silver, often using metal layering for color variation, achieved its highest refinement in the Islamic world.

How to Lose Weight on the Cabbage Soup Diet

The Cabbage Soup Diet is designed for the dieter looking to lose a significant amount of weight quickly. It is not meant to be used over a long period of time and is most ideal for someone that wants to drop 10 pounds or less.

Instructions

    1

Find the recipe for the cabbage soup online. Print out and follow the recipe for the cabbage soup that is used on the diet. The traditional recipe includes combining onions, peppers, cabbage, mushrooms, celery and soup mix. You can eat as much of this soup as you want.

    2

Add spices. To avoid getting sick of the soup, add different spices to appeal to your taste buds. Many people flavor the soup with spices such as salt, pepper, parsley, garlic and curry.

    3

Follow the seven day Cabbage Soup Diet plan. The plan involves eating as much fruit, vegetables and soup that you want. At the end of the week, you will add in additional food items.

    4

Drink a lot of water. For the diet to be successful, you need to consume at least six to eight glasses daily.

    5

Take a multivitamin. In order to give your body the vitamins and nutrients that you need, you should to take a daily vitamin supplement.

Famous Liquid Diets

Famous Liquid Diets

Liquid diets have been circulating among westernized population as early as the 1950s--and even before, if you consider that poet Lord Byron purportedly consumed vinegar-water to lessen his girth. Some liquid diets, such as the Master Cleanse, reached epic proportions of fame when celebrities, such as singer Beyonce and shock jockette Robin Quivers used them to shave off pounds. Doctors and dietitians agree that even the most famous liquid diet probably won't give you lasting results. But that doesn't stop people from buying into the dazzling flare of quick weight loss programs that involve consuming mostly water. Let's take a look at some of the more famous liquid diets in the annals of history.

The Master Cleanse

The most infamous of all liquid diets is the Master Cleanse, developed by holistic advocate Stanley Burroughs in the 1950s. Burroughs' believers continued to use this fasting diet to "detoxify" the body. Dieters consume nothing but purified water with scant amounts of maple syrup, lemon juice and cayenne pepper and follow this up with salt water, which purportedly "cleanses" the bowels. The Master Cleanse goes by numerous monikers, including the Lemonade Diet and the Maple Syrup Diet, and with its revival in the twenty-first century and free promotion from celebrity believers has since spawned numerous diets on the Internet very similar to the Master Cleanse.

The Water Diet

The Water Diet was conceived and executed by a mythical doctor named Douglas Silver Porter by the equally mythical Institute for Psychoactive Research. Yet the Water Diet caught on anyway, even gaining media attention. The principle behind the Water Diet is simple: drink 1/2-gallon of water every day for the rest of your life and eat what you would normally eat. Tap water, water purified through a Brita filter, bottled water--as long as it is not laden with heavy metals or parasites, any drinkable water is OK. Cold water purportedly works best, as the body must work harder to burn fat--however, eating ice cubes not allowed. The companion to this diet is the Institute for Psychoactive Research's "Air Diet."

Slim Fast

When it comes to liquid dieting, the canned drink supplement Slim-Fast is the resident workhorse. While Slim-Fast can be used as a replacement meal, the Slim-Fast plan makes available vitamin-rich snack bars. Although you may not expect this rather old-school method of weight loss to yield significant results, more than 20 scientific publications have touted the Slim-Fast Plan as an effective way to lose and maintain weight. A 2003 study by the North American Association for the Study of Obesity indicated that dieters who used the Slim-Fast Plan for 10 years were around 33 lbs. lighter than those who didn't use the plan. The efficacy of the Slim-Fast plan is possibly due to the fact that it make exercise mandatory, not optional.

The Herbalife Diet

The Herbalife Diet relies on dieters to purchase pricey protein drink mixes and packaged vitamins and nutritional supplements from the Herbalife company. Dieters enjoy an Herbalife shake every morning and noon, complemented with various "activator" capsules and multivitamins, and then eat a balanced evening meal. The marketing masterminds behind this liquid diet have structured its sale potential with an ingenious, nefarious beauty: the Herbalife Diet doubles as a pyramid scheme. In order to purchase these liquid diet products, you must become a distributor or know someone who sells the stuff. And when you do make a purchase, you'll get the hard sell to sell the Herbalife Diet products yourself. From a marketing perspective, this makes selling Master Cleanse diet kits over the Internet look like child's play.

The Cabbage Soup Diet

The Cabbage Soup Diet has been around since the 1950s and revived from time to time under different names, such as the Mayo Clinic Diet and the Sacred Heart Memorial Hospital Diet. There are probably just as many variations of the Cabbage Soup Diet as there are the Master Cleanse--however, all involve eating as much cabbage soup as the dieter likes. The Mayo Clinic firmly disavows anything to do with this diet, and the Sacred Heart Memorial Hospital has been revealed to be nonexistent--this particular variation of the diet, which encourages consumption of hot, black coffee should have been a clue. Side effects of the Cabbage Soup Diet include rapid weight loss during the first week of use, as well as light-headedness, dizziness, bloating and flatulence.

Can Cabbage Act as a Colon Cleanser?

Cabbage--along with the other members of the Brassica family of vegetables, including Brussel sprouts, cauliflower, kale, and broccoli--is very good for your colon and may help prevent colon cancer. A sulfur-containing compound called sinigrin is released when you chew these vegetables, resulting in a synergistic chain reaction of compounds that promotes gastrointestinal health and may also inhibit cell division in human tumor cells.

Nutrition and Health Benefits of Cabbage

Cabbage is an excellent source of vitamins C, A and B1. It is also rich in fiber, calcium, potassium, iodine, phosphorus, sulfur and sodium. Cabbage juice is especially good in relieving constipation and aiding digestion. Cabbage contains glutamine, an amino acid that helps detoxify the digestive track and strengthen the immune system. It is high in antioxidants and sulforaphane, both of which protect against cancer. Eating cabbage builds the blood and aids in weight loss. Cabbage is also good for your complexion, both topically and internally.

Red cabbage, especially, is rich in phytonutrients that protect your body from free-radical damage. It has a higher vitamin C, manganese, folic acid and magnesium content than the other green and white varieties.

Preparation

Cabbage is best eaten raw to gain all the amazing health benefits. If you cook it too much you will destroy all of the important enzymes and deplete its nutritional value. Coleslaw is a great way to eat cabbage raw. Juicing is also highly beneficial and is said to help heal stomach ulcers. To gain the nutritional benefits of cabbage and other cruciferus vegetables, it is best to consume them at least three times per week.

Cabbage Soup Detox Diet

There is even a cabbage soup detox diet recipe, also known as the Sacred Heart diet, that promotes weight loss and colon cleansing. For one week, eat all the cabbage soup you want made from V8 juice, tomatoes, cabbage, celery, carrots, onions and green beans. Other whole foods--such as fruit, vegetables and meat-are assigned to be eaten various days of the week. Because you only eat whole nutritional foods, you body has a chance to detox and eliminate all of the toxins that have accumulated in the colon.

Precautions

Not everyone can eat cabbage. People who have thyroid problems or take anticoagulant medication should speak with their doctor before eating cabbage on a regular basis.

Effects of Dark Chocolate and Red Wine on the Cardiovascular System

Deep dark chocolate, ruby red wine--two of the most rich and decadent foods available to modern humanity. Research indicates that these two foods are also rich sources of compounds known as polyphenols, which may be very beneficial for the human cardiovascular system. Red wine and dark chocolate have become two strong symbols for how eating for pleasure can be the pinnacle of eating for health.

Function

Polyphenols are antioxidant compounds found in a large variety of fruits, vegetables and spices. Researchers at the Universit Louis Pasteur de Strasbourg, in France, identified red wine and chocolate (along with tea) as some of the most potent common sources of polyphenols in our daily diet. They found that polyphenols exhibit many different properties that combine to contribute significantly to the health of our heart and circulatory system.

Effects

The researchers found that the polyphenols present in red wine and chocolate had vasoprotective, antiangiogenic (regulates blood vessels), antiatherogenic (inhibits artery plaque), vasorelaxant and antihypertensive properties. The combined effects of these actions on the entire cardiovascular system makes polyphenol-rich foods like red wine and chocolate great daily sources of heart healthy compounds.

Chocolate

Chocolate has a long history of being a sacred and valued food in the Americas and was even used as currency by the Maya. Recently, faculty at the University of California, Davis conducted a review of studies done on dark chocolate and cardiovascular health. They concluded that the polyphenol flavonoids in chocolate have substantial benefit to heart health and should be included in doctors' recommendations to patients in moderation.

Red Wine

Red wine has a long history of use among European countries and is considered one of the healthful components of the Mediterranean diet, which is characterized by its relatively low rate of heart disease. Researchers at the University of Toronto, Canada recently studied red wine's effect on atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease. They found that red wine contains a variety of compounds including trans-resveratrol, quercetin and other antioxidants that seem to provide multiple mechanisms for protecting the heart.

Expert Insight

Interestingly, the oldest recorded lifespan on record belongs to Jeanne Calment of France, who died in 1997 at 122 years of age. According to her wikipedia entry, Calment ate a kilo of chocolate weekly and drank red port wine on a regular basis. She also smoked until she was 117. A recent article in Science Daily reported that studies have shown that dark chocolate reduces the ill effects of smoking on the heart.

About Polarity Massages

Polarity massage uses the idea the four elements, modern science and spiritual wisdom to treat a variety of ailments. This type of massage works with the human energy field and the belief that inside every body there are currents or pathways of energy.

History

Polarity therapy and massage was created by Dr. Randolf Stone, a doctor of osteopathic medicine (D.O.), chiropractic (D.C) and naturopathic medicine (N.D). His first published book, Energy in 1947 was about holistic teachings. By 1954 he had published 7 more books on the subject.
After much traveling, teaching and learning from medical and holistic practitioners around the world he believed that each cell in the human body has a magnetic or polarized field.
He believed this force of energy could be directed to create health. Throughout his life he expanded on his main belief and in 1984 an group of people got together to create the national organization known as American Polarity Therapy Association.

Types

There are 3 types of energetic poles that run through ones body. These lines of current are energy fields. The first line runs east to west.
The second line of energy runs north to south and the last line is an outward spiral that starts at the navel and weaves its way throughout the body.
Polarity massage uses gentle physical stimulation to balance out these energies within the body. Polarity therapy also combines physical stimulation with detoxification and simple exercise. All these items incorporated together can create better health.

Features

To achieve maximum health and wellness through polarity massage a patient must undergo a combination of 4 elements in one treatment. These are vital to polarity massage and therapy. The four parts are bodywork, diet, exercise and self-awareness.
Body work is the gentle massage part of polarity therapy. This massage is used to balance out the energies already in the body. They can be positive, negative or neutral. The touch of massage is then used to place these essential energies back to where they should be.
Diet is the detoxification of the body. This element in polarity massage is prescribed by the polarity therapist and is used to cleanse the body of impurities.
Exercise for polarity therapy is stretching, meditation and breathing as ways to re-balance your body and your body's energies.
Self-awareness is also incorporated in polarity therapy and massage. The massage therapist working with you will work with you to identify your health goals. They will also help you find identify where everyday stressors come from in order to manage or eliminate them.

Effects

The effects of polarity massage and therapy will be seen in your every day life. A healthy lifestyle will be gained by the diet and exercise. Also since you will be eating better, getting more exercise and rebalancing the body's energies through polarity massage you will have increased activity levels, better health and a general feeling of well-being.

Considerations

Polarity massage can be performed on a client who is fully clothed. The massage is based upon the soft touching of specific areas of the body to induce the proper energy restoration. This touch can be done while the patient is clothed. Some rocking and point specific touching of the spine or the body may also be done to help the body heal itself.
