Acid reflux affects one in 10 Americans, with symptoms varying in severity. Chest pain or pain in the throat can sometimes be so severe they mimic a heart attack. Symptoms of acid reflux can occur when lying down, bending over, lifting and after a heavy meal. Certain foods, obesity, stress or medications can also trigger an attack of acid reflux. When the refluxed acid from the stomach reaches the esophagus lining, it burns.
Basil, also known as St. Joseph's Wort, is well known for its use in problems related to the stomach. The herb's stomachic and carminative properties provide temporary relief for acid reflux.
