As a supplemental ingredient in dog food recipes, rice is easy on your dog's digestive system and can play an important role in his daily diet. According to Veterinarian Roy Hines, DVM, rice bran provides taurine, an amino acid not found in other dog food filler ingredients but an essential nutrient for your pooch's health. When making your own dog food recipes, avoid using leftover table rice that contains salt or seasonings.
Instructions
- 1
Boil the rice as directed on the package, omitting salt. Let it cool to room temperature. Avoid fast-cook rice because much of the fiber and rice bran are destroyed during the pre-cooking process. You can store cooked rice in a covered bowl in the refrigerator for up to four days.
2Strive for a ratio of 25-percent meat, poultry or fish and the remaining 75-percent as a combination of rice, vegetables, eggs and whole wheat or soy flour. According to FeedAgg.com, your dog will derive more vitamins and nutrients from homemade dog food than from the canned or dry kibble varieties that are available commercially.
3Combine 1 cup of cooked brown rice with 1/2 cup of cooked spinach and 1/2 cup of raw shredded carrots. Add 1 egg and 1/2 cup of sodium-free cottage cheese. Stir well and add 1/2 cup of cooked hamburger or another cooked meat product. Sprinkle 1/4 cup whole-wheat flour or soy flour over the mixture and combine thoroughly. Once mixed, this recipe lasts up to two days in the refrigerator. Double or triple the recipe for larger dogs.
4Settle your dog's upset stomach with a recipe that includes rice. Since rice is easily digestible, you can make a soothing meal by combining 2 cups of cooked rice with 1 cup of sodium-free cottage cheese. Feed small portions frequently until his stomach upset subsides. You can introduce additional ingredients gradually as his stomach allows.
5Customize your dog food recipes by adding nutritious supplemental ingredients. Popular ones include powdered egg shells, steel-cut oats, fish oil, bone meal or a specially prepared dog vitamin supplements. (See Resources)
