Pancreatitis is inflammation of the pancreas, an organ that is vital to the digestion of food. It can begin suddenly and your dog will show symptoms such as abdominal pain and distention, loss of appetite, depression, dehydration, vomiting and diarrhea. You should consult your veterinarian for any combination of these symptoms, as they could indicate serious illness.
Abdominal Pain and Distention
If your dog is suffering from pancreatitis, he will show signs of abdominal pain by arching over, and you will be able to see distention or swelling in his belly.
Loss of Appetite
Pancreatitis will cause your dog to lose her appetite. She will have no interest in food because of her stomach distress.
Depression
Your dog will exhibit depression with pancreatitis, by sleeping more than usual, being lethargic or even by wanting to stay close to you at all times. You will know best what is unusual behavior for your dog.
Dehydration
With pancreatitis, your dog may be dehydrated. Her nose, mouth and eyes will be dry.
Vomiting and Diarrhea
Pancreatitis can cause your dog to vomit or to have diarrhea. The diarrhea may be yellowish in color and appear greasy.
Warning
If your dog is exhibiting symptoms that could be pancreatitis or some other serious illness, seek veterinary care as soon as possible for diagnosis and treatment. Left untreated, severe pancreatitis can be fatal.
