What Is a Cardiac Diet?

The cardiac diet was set up for people who are at a high risk of developing a heart condition such as a heart attack. It is an individualized, healthy eating plan that is tailored to a person's specific needs by a dietitian. It can also be used by anyone as a preventive measure. The diet comes with some specific guidelines.

Fats

    There are good fats and bad fats. Saturated fats and trans fats are bad, and they are not allowed. Monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats are allowed.

Sodium

    Sodium causes the body to retain water, which can increase blood pressure. It is restricted on the diet.

Caffeine

    The cardiac diet prohibits drinks containing caffeine. Some examples are coffee, soft drinks, teas and energy drinks.

Fiber

    Fiber is also promoted on the diet for its ability to lower cholesterol levels. Fruits, vegetables, legumes and whole grains are recommended sources of fiber.

Control

    One last component of the diet is making sure to keep portion sizes under control.
